Unire raras Partnr trice,
HENRY RUPF, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FSIENING DEVICE FOR TRAVELlNG-BAGS, SATCHEKLS, 84C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365.760,dated June 28, 1887.
Application tiled January 20, 1887. Serial No. 224,906.
To all whom it may concern: l
Beit known that I, HENRY RUPF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices adapted for use on traveling-bags, satehels, trunks, and other articles, as set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a traveling-bag. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a fastening device. Fig. 3-is a section inthe plane x x, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of a portion of a travelingbag having a modified form of fastening. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the fastening device of Fig. 4L. Fig. 6 is a section in the planeyy, Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a section in the plane z z, Fig. 5.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. In the drawings, A B are two jaws of a traveling-bag, C. To one of the jaws is attached by suitable means-such as rivets-a housing or bearing, D, supporting a pivot, F, on which swings the clasp or fastening device.
The clasp or fastening device consists of an arm, E, carrying a suitable engaging device, such as lugs or ears G. Vhen the jaws A R are closed, the engaging device G can be madeto engage or grasp .the jawsand hold thejaws closed. A spring, H, is suitably secured in place, as by a rivet or screw, L, engaging the spring H and housing D. In the drawings thescrew L is shown as engaging the spring H and an arm or block, M, secured to the sides of the housing D. The spring H tends to force the engaging device G into engagement with the jaws A B. l
The arm E is provided with a suitable tailpieee, I, situated on the side of the pivot F opposite to that on which the arm E is situated. The tail -`piece I offers convenient means for opening theclasp, since by pressing the tail-piece toward the housing D, or toward the jaws A B, the engaging device G is carried, against the resistance of spring H, to the position indicated in Fig. 3 by dotted lines, allowing thejaws A B to be opened or separated from one another.
(No model.)
Instead of having the engaging device in the form of lugs or ears G, said engaging device can be made in the form of a spur or projection, J, entering a hole, N, vin the jaw A, and engaging a suitable eye, K, on the jaw B. The housing D, as also the fastening device, can be made of any suitable materialsuch as metal-and cast or struck out or otherwise formed into the proper shape.
By having the tail-piece. I situated as shown the operator is not` compelled to grasp the arm E to free the jaws A B from the engaging device G or the engaging device J. It should also be noticed that in the case of the 'fastening device shown in Figs. 4, 5', 6, and 7 the tail-piece I allows the spur or projection J to be moved far enough from the jaw B to open thejaws A B; but said tail-piece does not al- 7o low the spur Jrto move completely out of the housing D. rIlhe free end of the spur J is thus prevented from coming out of the hous ing D, and articles-such as clothes which are being put into or taken out of t-he receptacle to which the spur J is attached are not apt to catch on said spur and be torn by said spur. In the case of the construction shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, it should also be noticed that the tail-piece I prevents excessive movement of the lugs G, while allowing sufficient movement to the lugs G to lock or unlock the jaws A B.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is-
The combination-ofthe housing D, the arm E, arranged vertically in the housing, and having at its lower end an engaging device, and pivoted intermediate its ends to provide the top tail-piece, I, the inward movement of which into the housing moves the engaging device outward, and the spring H in the housing, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 95 my hand and seal in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses. V
