' W. J. LARGE.
OLASP FOR TRAVELING BAGS. v No. 298,481. Patentgd May 13, 1884;
.w. a BY/ ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES ATENT Fries.
WILLIAM J. LARGE, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
CLASP FOR TRAVELINGBAGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,481, dated May 13, 1884-.
Application filed March 11, 1884. (No model.)
To a. whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. LARGE, of
-, Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Clasp for Traveling-Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved clasp for retaining the jaws of traveling-bags, 850., in closed position; and theinvention consists, principally, of a spring-clasp made of a single piece of metal.
The invention also consists of the combination, with the. spring-clasp, of suitable stops or detents for holding the clasp in open and closed position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a part of the jaws of a traveling-bag, showing my new and improved clasp applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken 011 the line at w of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the bag-frame, showing the clasp attached.
A represents the clasp, made of a single piece of spring-metal, wire preferred, and B represents the block by which the clasp is attached to the jaw O of the travelingbag. The clasp A is formed by preference by bending a wire of suitable size to form, first, the cheek-pieces c a, which are adapted to embrace the outside of the jaws O D of the bag, and then to form the spring-arms b b, which are bent inward at their ends, as shown at c c, to form the straight portions 0 c, which portions cc are adapted to enter the orifice d, made in the block B, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and thusform the pivot of the clasp. The block B is attached to the jaw O by the rivets e e, and in this instance the block Bis faced with the plate f, which is notched at its edges, as shown at g g, in such manner as to form the curved flanges h h, which serve to spread the arms I) b when the clasp A is opened and closed, so that when the clasp is turned outward and upward on its pivots 0, so that the arms I) I) enter the notches g g, the spring action of the arms will retain the clasp in opened position; and when the clasp is forced downward to closed position, (the position shown in Fig. 1,) the curved lower portion of the flanges h h will act as stops to the clasp A and cause the spring action of the arms I) 6 thereof to retain the clasp in closed position.
Constructed in' this manner, it will be seen that the clasp is very cheap and very convenient and practical.
Hzwing thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The clasp A for traveling-bags, made of spring metal bent to form the arms b b, and.
formed or provided with the cheek-piece a a, and adapted to be hinged to the jaw of the bag-frame, substantially as described.
2. The clasp A, made of a single piece of metal forming spring-arms b, in combination with the face-plate f, formed with the curved flanges h, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with the clasp A, having the spring I), of the face-plate f, formed with the notches g g and curved flanges h 71, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
