UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT A. ROSE, OF GREGORY, MICHIGAN.
EXPANSION EEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,098, dated March 8, 1887.
I Application filed November 11, 1886. Serial No. 218,560. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. Rose, of Gregory, in the county of Livingston and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Expansion lVheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in expansion wheels.
The object of the invention is to produce a wheel the diameter of which can readily be enlarged or diminished.
The invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of a wheel the arms of which carry sliding heads adapted to be simultaneously advanced or retracted, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the axis of the shaft.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a hub, which is rigidly secured upon the shaft 13. This hub A is provided with the arms 0, upon the outer ends of which are fitted the heads D, in such a manner that they may easily slide upon said arms.
E are sliding hubs on the shaft upon either side of the hub A. These hubs E are connected, by a series of levers, F, to the sliding heads D. In the peripheries of the hubs E are formed annular channels a, with which pins 1) of the bifurcated levers G engage, said levers being fulcrumed at suitable points in the supporting-frame. The opposite ends of the levers G are connected together by togglelevers H, which are in turn connected by a crank-arm, I, to a rock-shaft, J. Bythis concone-pulleys in corn-planters for regulating the distance between rows, 820.
Two wheels of this character may be used together and s0 connected that as one was enlarged the other would be simultaneously diminished.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is-,'
1. The combination, with the shaft, hub fixed thereon, arms extending from said hub, and heads sliding on said arms, of the sliding hubs E, pivotally connected with said heads,
substantially as described.
2. In an expansion pulley, the combination of a wheel, sliding heads D, a system of levers,
' F, and sliding hubs E, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In an expansion pulley, the combination of a hub, A, having arms 0, sliding heads D, sliding hubs E, levers F G, toggle'levers H, erank-arm I, and roekshaft J, constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
ALBERT A. ROSE.
