IMPROVED CARRIAGE-BRAKE.
.The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part; of the same,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. KIMBLE, of Allev gheny City, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Acting Speed-Regulator; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had.v to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices used for regulating the speed of vehicles drawn by horse-power; and consists in providing a circular disk, to which is attached a notched Wheel, both of which are affixed to the hub of wheels, by means of screws or such like devices; by also providing two levers, pivoted and parallel with the hind axle-tree, and so arranged, and of such a form that the ends near the hubs will catch in the notched wheel before described, and also will, when operated upon as hereinafter -to be described, bear against the side face of the before-mentioned disk. These levers are operated upon by and are connected with two levers running parallel and on each side of the coupling pole of the vehicle, which levers are connected in any suitable manner with a right-angled lever, vibrating-and pivoted to suitable bearings, attached also to the coupling-pole. A strap, chain, or any such like device, is connected with the upper portion or throw of the before-mentioned right-angled lever, to which chain are attached two ropes, or such like device or devices, which pass through a guide attached to the tongue of the wagon or vehicle, and pass around a pin affixed to the neck-yoke, and upwards to the horses hames.

The mode of operating my devices is asfollows, viz:
The vehicle, when descending an incline, will have a tendency to crowd down on the horses flanks, on which, beasts naturally draw upward their heads and hold back, to prevent themselves from being overbalanced or thrown down. This act operates and puts in motion my devices, as the ropes E and E being connected with the horses hames, and furthermore, being directly connected with the right-angled lever D by means of the strap E, any such action on the part of -the horse will pull over the right-angled lever D, in such a manner that it will operate upon the levers G andO, and at the same .time, and by the same operation, operate upon the levers B and B, pressing their ends against the notched wheel A and also, laterally, against the 7 face of the disk A, thus locking the wheels, and making the descent comparatively easy. Directly the vehicle gets on level ground, the devices operate reversely, and the levers B and B are withdrawn from contact with the disk A, and notched wheel A As self-acting brakes or speed-regulators have been heretofore made, the locking is performed by means of rubbers, which bear on the periphery of the wheel, and are also cumbrous, expensive, and, by reason of many joints, constantly wanting repairs.
By my devices the wheels are looked more securely,
more permanently, andby also a verysimple arrangement, which insures success.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my self-acting speed-regulator,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The disk A and notched wheel A with the levers B and B, when connected with the hub A and axletree It, as described, in combination with the cranklever D, levers O and O, strap E, cords E and E and neck-yoke G with its devices, when constructed, combined, and arranged, substantially as herein described and for the purpose set forth. 7
