Description

CHARLES M. ERWIN.
improvement in Horse Power.
N0, H9158] Patented Oct. 3,1871.
UNITED STATES CHARLES M. ERWIN, OF WINONA, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,587, dated October 3, 1871.
T0 all whom t may concer/n:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. EEWIN, of Winona, in the county of Carroll and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Powers, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is an improvement upon the patent of John F. Collins, August l, 1871, No. 117,516 and consists in certain details of construction fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a perspective view of a horse-power wheel having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a plan view ofthe same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the king-post of an ordinary horsepower wheel, which post is adapted to revolve in any suitable bearings. B B B B represent radial arms formed by running beams of suitable length through the king-post at right angles to each other, as shown. C C represent the driving or main levers, which are secured to the auxiliary levers or beams B B in the following manner: They are directly secured near their inner ends to the arms B in any proper manner, and indirectly, by means of the cross-ties D, to the arms B, as shown. E E represent posts connecting the power-wheel above to the inner ends of lthe levers, by which means the latter are held from sagging.
It is believed that the construction and arrangement of levers shown possess markedadvantages over the ordinary forms of construction, and that the power is thereby applied in a similar manner to that applied by means of a cant-hook. A marked advantage is obtained in this construction, inasmuch 4as the draft animals are enabled to exert their power in a direct line with the point of resistance, as indicated in Fig. 2. The dotted line indicates the lever as ordinarily arranged. It will be observed that the draft, as indicated by this line, is improperly applied in the old arrangement, While with mine it is in a direct line with the point of resistance.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The levers C C, united to the Vhorse-power Wheel by means of the radial arms B B and connecting-bar D, as described.
2. The Wheel described, with king-post A, arms B B', levers C C, connecting-bar D, and standards E, combined and arranged as described.
CHAS. M. EBWIN.
