LOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,416, dated February 22, 185.7. Application tiled November 24, 188.5. Serial No. 183,981. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:`
Be it known that I. JAMES H. SPEAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locketsa Double- Cover Locket in Imitation of a Hunting-Oase Watch; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to double-cover iockets, and is designed to hold pictures in the inner face of its caps 10, and dial-plates between the glasses 3 in the bezel 2; but I may also insert pictures in place of the dial-plates, its advantages and construction heilig hereinafter fully described in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure/l is a perspective view of my watch-locket, with one of the caps thrown back. Fig. 2 is a perpendicular sectional view cut through Fig. l on the line x x when the case is closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bezel, showing one edge, 5, turned down. Fig. 4 is a face view of the ring or body and neck of the locket. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the bezel 2, showing both edges, 5 and l2, turned down. The bezel is shown to be thicker in the drawings than it is. It is, in fact, quite thin, so much so that the said edges 5 and 12 may be turned down on the glasses 3 3 by running a rod around them.
The object of my invention is to furnish a double-cover locket in imitation of a huntingcase watch, with a plain, iigured, or gnarled center ring, l, as shown in Fig. 4, which holds the bezel 2, which bezel holds the glasses 3 and dials 4, the bezel 2 being held in place on the inside of the ring l by means of the friction caused by the contact of the faces of the pieces, the glass and dials being held in place by a ange, 5, which is turned in on one edge of the bezel 2. After the glasses and dials are placed in the bezel 2 the upper edge of the same is pressed over them, thus forming an upper flange, 12.. This bezel is made very thin and pliant. The dials 4 are printed one on either side of a piece of paper, or they may be printed or engraved on separate pieces of paper or other material. The said center ring, 1, is cast, molded, or otherwise formed with a pendant or head, 6, which forms a part of the ring, and holds a loose ring, 7, by which the locket may be attached to a chain or guard. Extending'below the lower edge of the said head 6 are two snaps, 8, one on either side of the head, each having a small incline or bezel, 9, by which the caps 10 are made to slip under the said snaps, and are held shut by the same. The said caps 10 are hinged to the ring l at a joint, 1l, directly opposite the head 6, thus allowing the caps to have sufficient spring to snap under the snaps S. The inner and both side faces of the said ring are perfectly smooth and level, having no anges or snap to hold the caps 10 shut, as is usual in watches or other lockets; but the said caps are held down solely by the snaps 8, as above mentioned. The inside face of the said ring is also smooth and level, and has no lugs, screws, rivets, or other contrivances to hold the bezel in place; but the same is held in place by the friction between the parts.
Thus it will be seen that the simplicityin the construction of my invention enables me to produce an article of manufacture at a moderate cost, which is an important item in producing trinkets to please the young.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a doublecover locket in imitation of a huntingcase watch, the center ring, l, having its inner edge and both side pieces smooth and even, the pendant or head 6, made with as part of said ring, and having thereon the snaps 8 and the inclines 9, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a double-cover locket in imitation of a hunting-case watch, the center ring, l, having its inner edge and both its side pieces smooth and even, and its pendant or head 6 made with as part of said ring, and having thereon the snaps S and inclines 9, the bezel 2, held in said ring by friction between the two parts, and caps 10, hinged to said ring and secured under the snaps S, all substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a donblecover locket in imitation of a hunting-case Watch, the center ring, 1, and the bezel 2, held in said ring by friction between the two parts, and caps 10, hinged to said ring and secured under snaps S, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a double-cover locket in imitation of a' hunting-case watch, the center ring, 1, having its inner edge and both side faces smooth and even, as shown and described.
5. A double-cover locket in imitation of a hunting-case watch, consisting of the center ring, l, having its inner edge and both faces smooth and even, the head 6, secured to said ring, said head having formed therein snaps 8, and inclines 9 on said snaps, caps 1 0, one side hinged to said ring and the other adapted t0 being snapped under said snaps, and adapted to hold pictures in their inner face, and the bezel 2, fitting in the Said ring and adapted to hold under its flanges 5 and 12 the glasses 3 and the dials 4, pictures or the like, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES II. SPRAGUE.
