Description
B. S. GODDARD. CHARM AND TRIMMING.
APPLICATION FILED MAB. 7, 190a.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD S. GODDARD, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO IRONS & RUSSELL COMPANY, OF SACO, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
CHARM AND TRIMMING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
To all whom ti may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. GODDARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Charms and Trimmings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Like reference letters indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a charm embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective vievs of the charm before the trimming or detachable head is mounted thereon. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the detachable head or medallion, which constitutes the trimming. Fig. 4 is a reverse plan View of the same. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of said detachable head. Fig. 6 shows in elevation the locking pin for securing the parts of said device together in wearing position.
My invention relates to the charms which are worn on watch chains or fobs, and consists of the novel construction and combination of the several parts or elements hereinafter described and claimed.
The charm illustrated in the drawings comprises a Maltese cross with an emblem or badge secured detachably thereto, but it is evident that the form or design of either or both of said parts may be varied as desired, the invention herein claimed relating to the detachability of these parts from each other, the means of securing them together or separating them from each other, and means for concealing said securing means.
In Fig. l A is the charm, base, or body portion, made of metal of a suflicient thickness to allow the formation therein of sockets B and the perforation C. The charm or body portion is preferably a plate, square, rectangular or polygonal in outline, and from its corners extend radially directed slots. Each socket B, shown in Fig. 2, is represented as square and has a closed bottom. The perforation C extends crosswise of the charm and parallel to the face thereof, and terminates at the inner ends of two of the oppositely directed slots, which are in alinement. The trimming of this charm consists of a head or medallion D, ornamented upon its front or exterior surface and. provided on its rear surface with the two cubical lugs or blocks E, each of which has a perforation F. The head or medallion D is of such width or diameter as to extend over, cover, or conceal to some extent the inner closed ends of said slots. The lugs or blocks E are of such size and shape as to fit detachably in the sockets B, respectively. When these lugs or blocks are so engaged, the perforations F thereof are in alinement with the perforations C of the charm, said perforations C and F being of the same diameter. A locking pin Gr fits frictionally and snugly in the said perforations C F, but so as to be capable of a detaching movement therefrom. When said pin G is in wearing position its ends are flush with those edges of the charm where said perforations .C begin.
This invention is also applicable to badges, brooches, lockets, rings and other similar articles of personal wear.
I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The improved charm and trimming herein described, consisting of the body portion having two oppositely directed slots which are in alinement and are made with closed inner ends, and also having two rectangular sockets with closed bottoms at right angles with the face of said body portion and provided with a straight perforation which extends through said body portion, parallel to the face thereof, and also through two opposite sides of said sockets and terminates in the closed inner end of both of said slots, all in a single alinement; a head adapted to rest upon said face in contact therewith and having a width suflicient to enable it to extend beyond and conceal the inner closed ends of both of said slots; two lugs projecting from the under side of said head and of a size and shape to fit snugly but detachably in said sockets, respectively, said lugs having perforations therethrough, which, when said lugs are fully seated in said sockets, are in alinement with said perforation of the body portion; and a straight locking pin inserted in and passing through said perforation of the body portion and of said lugs, and having its ends flush with the closed inner ends of said two slots but concealed by the overlapping edges of the head projecting beyond the same.
2. In a charm and trimming, the combination of a base plate having slots, on two opposite edges and which are in alinement and also provided with two recesses on its upper face which are in alinement with said slots;
an ornamental head having two lngs adapted said slots, respectively, but concealed by the 10 and spaced to be loosely inserted in said reornamental head.
oesses; and a locking pin Whose length is In testimony whereof I affix my Signature less than the diameter of said ornamental in presence of two Witnesses. head inserted in a bore of the base p ate parallel to the face thereof and in perfora- EDWVARD GODDARD tions of said lugs to hold the base plate and Witnesses:
ornamental head together, said pin having HOWARD A. LAMPREY,
its ends flush with the perforated bottom of ELLIS W. MA ALLIsTER.
