I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,723, dated September 28, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VANTON KULrcH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefful Improvements in Bureau-Beds, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to improvements in the bureau-bed for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me hereto- .fore, No. 328,895, dated October 20, 1885the nected by transverse front and rear pieces, a

hinged front panel having fixed side boards and top panels, of which one is hinged to the casing, the other to the front wall. The hinged top panel is locked at right angles to the front panel when the latter is lowered into horizont'al position. To the front panel is attached by locking devices a detachable springf mattress, which is formed of a middle section, a hinged head-section, and a hinged foot-section, which latter is provided with hinged legs and a hinged foot-board. The middle and foot sections of the springframe are connected by inclined straps attached to the frames of said sections, the pivot-connection being made above the sections, so as to leave the required space for the mattress between them when they are folded up for being stored away in the casing.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved bureau-bed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section Aof the same, showing it arranged as a bed.

Fig. 4 is a plan of Fig. 3, with part broken away. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section of the bed, showing it in folded-up state as a bureau; and Figs. 6 and 7 are details showing the connection of the top panel with the hinged front panel of the casing. Y

A in the Vdrawings represents the casing of my improved bureau-bed, `which is composed of two L-shaped side walls, A A', that are connected by transverse top and bottom pieces,

To the front wall, b, is hinged a frontpanel, A2, which is provided at both sides with fixed side' boards, a2, that fit into the open parts of 5 the L-shaped side walls, and form with the same the side walls of thevcasing when the bed is folded up into a bureau, as shown in Fig. l. The front wall, A2, is provided with handles, ring-shaped pulls, or other devices, in imitation of the handles of the bureau drawers. To the upper edge ofthe front panel, A2, is hinged a top panel,` a3, that is equal in width to the side boards, a2, so as to close the same, while the L-shaped side walls, A', are closed by a rear top panel, a, that is swung into upright position and supported by folding braces a5, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.

To the front panel, A2, is attached, by means of pivoted retaining-hooks d d, a spring-mat tress, B B', which can be readily detached from the panel A2 on swinging the hooks d d sidewise of the bottom slats of the spring-mat` tre'ss B.

The spring-mattress B B is made of three 7 sections, a middle section, B, a hinged footsection, B', which is adapted to fold on the middle section, and of a head-section, B2, that is hinged by inclined straps e e to the middle sectionin the manner fully described in the patent hereinbefore referred to. The middle section only is held by the fastening devices on the front panel, A2, the frame of the foot-section of the mattress being hinged to the panel of the middle section of the mattress, as shown 8 in Fig. 4. When the middle section is unlocked from the front panel, A2, said middle section and the`footsection hinged tothe same can easily be withdrawn and removed, as the mattress is only held on the front panel by the locking device engaging the middle section.

The middle section, B, of the spring-mattress is somewhat larger than the front panel, A2, of the casing A, and extended beyond its hinge-connection with the front wall, b, into the casing A, as shown in Fig. 3. The footsection B is made-of the same size as the middle section, B, which gives agreater length for the bed, while the head-section is reduced in width. The foot-section B' is provided with a hinged foot-board, f, and hingedsupportinglegs f f', the foot-board and legs being folded IOO onto the foot-section when the same is folded up on the middle section, as shown in Fig. 5.

The middle and foot sections, B B', of the sprlng-mattress are connected by means of inclined straps g g', united by pivots g2 above the mattress, so as to leave sufficient space between the mattress-sections B B2 for folding up a horse-hair mattress, C, with said section, as shown in Fig. 5. The hinged top panel, a?, is locked at right angles to the front panel, A2, when the same is lowered into horizontal position, by a pivoted latch, h, which engages a keeper, h', at the upper edge ofthe front panel, A2, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, so as to form a rigid support for the front panel and springmattress, which does not change its position even when the bureau-bed is moved on t-he door. When folding up the bed,the keeper h its into a recess, h2, of the top panel, a3.'

The bureau-bed is changed from a bureau in to a bed, and vice versa, in the same manner as the bureau-bed described in my prior patent.

My improved construction hasthe advantage that the springmattress forms a separate part that can be readily detached for repairing or cleaning the same. Another advantage is that the mattress-sections take up a smaller space when folded up and bring the head-section lower down, so that the size of the casing can be materially reduced, owing to the more advantageous disposition ofthe sections in the space within the same as compared to my prior patent. The L-shaped sidewalls of the casing have the advantage that the head is left free for the better access of the air,while the hinged Vrear top panel increases the height of the casing and forms a head board when swung into upright position.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a supporting-casing having hinged front and top panels with adetachable spring-mattress made of folding sections, and devices for attaching the spring-mattress to the front panel of the casing, substantially as set forth.

The combination of a casing having upright side walls and transverse front and rear walls, a front panel hinged to the front wall, a top panel hinged to the front panel, devices for locking the top panel at right angles to the front panel, a detachable spring mattress formed of folding sections and a hinged headsection, and devices for attaching the folding spring-mattress to the front panel, substantially as vset forth.

The combination of a casinghaving upright side walls and a transverse front wall, a front panel hinged toV said front wall, a top panel hinged to the front panel, devices for locking tbetop panel at right angles to the front panel, a detachable spring --mattress formed of a middle section, a hinged foot-sec tion and a hinged headsection, and devices for attaching the middle sect-ion to thefront panel, the middle and` foot sections being of larger size than the. front panel, so as to extend when folded into the lowerpart of the casing, substantially as set forth.

4.- Ihe combination of la supporting-casing having hinged front panel, a top panel hinged t0. the front panel, devices for locking the top panel at right angles to the front panel, a detachable spring-mattress formed of a middle section attached to the front panel, a hinged head-section and ahinged footsertion, the latter being pivoted to side straps of the middle section and provided with hinged supportinglegs at the outer end, substantially as set forth.
