To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, PAUL P. LAGRANGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Combined Lounge and Folding Bed with Canopy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in a combined lounge and folding bed with canopy, which is adapted to be folded to form a lounge and also opened to form a complete bed having a canopy, when desired.

The object of my invention is to provide, at a reasonable cost, a device of this character which will be simple and reliable in construction and which will comprise the necessary mechanism to adapt it to be used as a comfortable and attractive lounge When folded, and also to be easily opened into a complete comfortable bed with a canopy, which will be as complete, attractive, and e ually as comfortable as the common form of bed which is not constructed to perform any other-function.

With the above-mentioned and other objects in view I have shown in the accompanying drawings the construction of a device of this character embodying the principles of my invention, in which drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device when opened as a bed and when the head with canopy attachment and foot thereof are raised. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device when opened as in Fig. 1, but when the head with canopy attachment and foot are lowered preparatory to folding into a lounge. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, after the device has been folded into a lounge, part being broken away to economize in space, the position which certain parts assume also being shown in dotted lines,'which are partly broken away to econoniize in space; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view, substantially on the line 4 4 in Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 and 1 are two side frames of substantially equal length, which are rigidly secured to their re spective end frame portions 2 3 and 4 5, respectively. These two sets of end frame portions are hinged, as at 6, so that when the bed is opened, as shown in Fig. 2, these frame portions form a horizontal structural boundary of the bed of any desired size and comprise two halves thereof hinged so as to fold one upon the other on a line substantially bisecting the two end portions of the opened bed-frame. The'half of thisframe comprising the parts 1, 2, and 3 is provided with suitable legs, as 7, which may be provided with casters 8, if desired, and this half of the frame is further provided with a series of suitablyspaced slats 9, which support a corresponding series of springs 10, which are shown by way of example as the common spiral metallic spring; but obviously other springs may be substituted. Upon the springs rest one-half of a mattress 11, which is made of any desired compressible material, such as hair. or cotton incased in a strong covering, such as burlap or ticking 12, an this mattress 11 may be secured to the frame by a suitable strap 13. The other half of the frame, comprising the parts 1, 4, and 5 has a series of suitably-spaced slats 14, similar to the slats 9, upon both sides of which slats are arranged suitable springs 15 and 16. Against the springs 15 is secured the other half of the mattress 17, similar to the half 1 1, and which may be secured to the frame 1 by suitable straps 18 and to the slats 14 by suitable straps 18. Over the series of springs 16 is secured. upholstering 19, the exterior covering of which may be of ornamental or fancy material, if desired, as it will be exposed to view when the device is folded into a lounge. Extending lengthwise of the last-described frame portion is a brace 20, which is secured to a suitable brace 21. To the brace 20 the lounge back 22 is hinged, as at 23,which may be provided with suitable upholstering 24, which may have a fancy or ornamental covering 25, if desired. I At each end of the brace 21 is rigidly secured an arm 26, which may have a brass or other metallic plate 27, adapted to rest on the floor when the bed is open. Each arm is provided with a socket 28, with which cooperate latches 29 to retain the back in the folded position shown in dotted lines in gig. 3 when the device is opened to form a The foot comprises two half-sections 30 and 31 of any ornamental or desired configuration, hinged together, as at 32, the hinge being constructed to open only one way, and these two sections of the foot are pivoted to the side frames at 33 and 34 to adapt it to be folded on top of the mattress, as shown in Fig. 2, when the bed is to be closed, and also to be opened out as a foot, as shown in Fig.1, when the bed is opened.

The head. is similar in construction to the foot and is here shown as comprising two half-sections and 36 of any ornamental or other desired configuration, preferably hinged at a plurality of places, such as 37 and 38, by one-way hinges similar to the hinge 32, and this head is pivoted at 39 to the frame 1 and at 40 to the frame 1, by which construction it may be folded into the position shown in Fig. 2 or opened up, as shown in Fig. 1, to form a suitable head. Mounted to rotate in the two outer portions 41 and 42 of the head are two extension members 43 and 44, each comprising an arm 45. These arms, by virtue of their being free to rotate with their respective extension members 43 and 44, can be folded into a position parallel with the top of the mattresses 1 1 and 17 when the bed is closed and also to be swung out into the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position they are locked by a bar 46, which may be secured to and easily removed from the arms 45. The arms 45 and bar 46 form a suitable means to which may be secured any canopy, drapery, or netting desired.

I have shown each half of the mattresses 11 and 17 as not extending the entire length of the bed in one integral piece, but formed of a main portion and a relatively small portion secured to each main portion by hinges 47, preferably made of the same material as the mattress-covering. The small end sections 48 of the mattresses can thus be raised easily, and by this construction I provide a convenient receptacle for any removable part of the bed structure or fitting, such as the bar 46 and the canopy or draperies. As these small end sections of the mattresses are merely under the pillows of the bed, the springs may conveniently be omitted under them, and by such an arrangement the additional space may be utilized for storing the bed-pillows or bedding,- if desirable.

The portions 41 and 42 of the head of the bed have hinged thereto braces 41 and 42 and the portions 30 and 31 of the foot of the bed have hinged thereto braces 30 and 31*, said braces being adapted to engage pins in the body portion of the bed to hold the head and foot in upright position. When not required for use, the braces are located between the mattress and the frame of the bed.

From the foregoing description the operation of the mechanism in my device will be obvious. Assuming the device to be in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, it forms a complete and comfortable lounge with back and end arms. To open the device to form a bed with a canopy, the back 22 is folded down to the position shown in dotted lines and latched there by the latch 29. The device is now easily swung open to the position shown in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. 3

.on the hinges 6, in which position the plate 27 rests on the floor, as shown, thereby adding steadiness and safety when used as a bed. It is to be noticed that there is no central frame or brace which could project upward in the center of the bed when in its open position, as the end frames 2, 3, 4, and 5 are rigidly secured to the side frames 1 and 1 and hinged together merely at 6. This construction is designed with the object of providing a flat, even, and comfortable bed. The foot is now swung up on the pivots-33 and 34 to the position shown in Fig. 1, and the head is opened in a similar manner and the arms 45 rotated and locked by the bar 46 in the position shown in Fig. 1, when the device may be used as a complete and comfortable bed having provision for a canopy, drapery, or netting, &c.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A folding bed and lounge, comprising a sectional frame, each section being provided upon one side with springs and with a mattress, and one of said sections being provided upon the opposite side with springs and upholstering, substantially as described.

2. In a folding bed and lounge, a two-sectioned frame hinged to fold, each section being provided with springs and a mattress on one side, and one of said sections being also provided with springs and upholstering on the other side, and a folding back therefor, substantially as described.
