JAMES w. KEAPP, or WARWICK, NEW YoEK.
WARDROBE CRIB OR BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,805, dated April 5, 1881.
' Application filed February 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warwick, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wardrobe Cribs or Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the wardrobecrib when open; Fig. 2, a perspective of it when closed, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section through Fig. 2.
My invention relates to that class of cribs and bedsteads which, when not in use, may be folded, when they imitate a wardrobe; and it consists in the construction and the combina tion hereinafter described, and then sought to be specifically defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the wardrobe, and B the crib. The wardrobe is made with the front exten sion, 0, beneath which is the drawer D, the front of which may be paneled and provided At the rear of the extension 0 there is placed an upright board, E, so as to leave a space, F, between it and the back of the wardrobe, into which space may be placed the pillows and other portions of the bed-clothing when the crib is folded. The wardrobe is further provided with the folding doors G, which serve as side pieces when the crib is folded, and as screens to the clothing hanging from the hooks H, fastened to the back of the wardrobe, when the crib is unfolded or in use. I
The doors G may be paneled and otherwise ornamented, so as to present in appearance an attractive head-piece to the crib and sides to the wardrobe.
I prefer to make the top of the wardrobe to project forward, as illustrated, so that a canopy or netting may be suspended therefrom over'the head of the occupant of the crib.
The bed B is hinged to the front of the extension G, as shown, and its sides have the panel-work I. At the lower ends of the side pieces are posts J, and between the posts is the foot-board K, which I prefer to make of the design shown, it being higher than the sides and posts, so as to admit of scroll-work, and is further ornamented with paneling on the outside. The outside of the bed bottom is likewise ornamented, so as to present an attractive front to the wardrobe when the crib is folded, and, if desired, it may be so ornamented as to imitate doors to the wardrobe. A ledge, L, extends along each side of the bed at its bottom, so as to fit flush against the front edges of the extension U and the doors G when the crib is folded, thereby forming a close and neat joint. It will also serve as a foot-rest to aid the child in gettingin andout of the bed.
To the lower end of the bed, ben.eath the.
foot-board, there is hinged a flap, M, which serves, when turned down, as a foot to the lower end of the bed, and when in use as a footit is held in place by the button N. When not in use as a foot and the crib is folded, this flap is turned up over the foot-board and fits against the front edge of the projecting top, and constitutes a part of the top of the wardrobe, thus effectually inclosing the bed, the sides of which fit inside of the doors G, and when folded the whole device appears as illustrated by Fig. 2.
The bed and wardrobe, when closed, are held together by a lock and key, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, or by other suitable means.
This article is of few parts, cheap of manufacture, conveniently used, and ornamental in appearance.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. The combined wardrobe and bed or crib, consisting of the wardrobe A, provided with extension (J, upright board E, and folding doors G, in combination with bed B, provided with end and side pieces, and having the hinged foot-piece M, the several parts adapted to operate as set forth, for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of wardrobe A, bed B, hinged piece M, and a button, N, the piece M being adapted to form a part of the top of the wardrobe when the parts are closed and a support for the bed when opened, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afllx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: JAMES W. KNAPP.
J AS. W. MULLEEY, B. F. VAIL.
