ANKLE AND SHIN BOOT AND CORD PROTECTOR FOR HORSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,032, dated May 4, 1886.

Application filed February 10, 1886. Serial No. 191,517.

for protecting the ankle and shin and also the cords in the rear part of the leg.

It consists of sections pivoted or hingedtogether so as to work independently on each other, these sections having elastic straps at tached to them, other sections having buckles sewed to them to make the fastenings, these sections being padded and united with the first-named sections by pads or rolls which extend horizontally between the two, passing around the rear portion of the leg.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of my device. Fig. 2 shows its application.

A A are pieces of leather or other suitable material formed so as to protect the shin and ankle of a horse. These sections are united together and hinged or pivot-ed, so that they may move about their points of union independently of each other. To one side of these sections are fixed the elastic straps B, having upon their ends the perforated straps O, which connect with the buckles after passing around the front of the horses legs, so as to hold the device securely in place.

D D are smaller sections, made also of leather or other suitable material, and padded on the inside. These sections are also united or hinged or pivoted, so as to have an independent or hinging movement, and they have the buckles E fixed to the outside edge, so as to receive the ends of the straps 0 when the device is fastened upon the leg of the animal.

Between the sections A and D padded strips of buckskin F pass, the lower section or cap, by which the shin is protected, being united to the lower corresponding section, D, the second and third sections being similarly united by these transverse strips or rolls, which thus pass around the back of the leg, the elastic straps passing around the front. These pads or rolls form an ample protection for the cord at the rear of the leg, when applied to the forelegs, and at the same time are completely separated from each other by open spaces which permit the air to circulate freely (No model.)

about the leg, thereby keeping it cool and lessening the liability to chafe. These open spaces also allow the rolls to close together when the horse bends the knee and ankle joints, thereby preventing binding or chafing of any kind.

The padded cap, forming the lower section, A, fits over the inside of the shin and securely protects it, and the sections extending above that give the necessary length,while the hing ing or pivoting of the buckle-sections, together with the open-work bars or strips, form a very valuable pad, which, while thoroughly protecting the leg, does not bind or hinder the movement in the least and does not chafe. It is applicable to either the front or the hind legs. This device is a great im provement upon the pad which is made in one piece, having a piece of kersey or other material completely encircling and covering the leg.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An ankle or shin boot composed of independent pieces pivoted or hinged together, and having straps secured to one edge, parallel independent hinged and padded pieces carrying buckles to which these straps are connected, in combination with transverse uniting bars or strips, substantially as herein described.

2. In a horse-boot, the separated rolls extending between the shin-pad and the bucklecarrying sections, so as to form a protection to the rear portion of the leg, substantially as herein described.

A shin-pad having one or more sections hinged or pivoted to the shin-protecting caps and extending upwardly therefrom, padded strips or rolls attached to one side of these sections, so as to pass around behind the leg, and having their opposite ends attached to similarly-hinged padded buckle-carrying sections, in combination with elastic straps which pass around the leg and are connected with the buckles, substantially as herein de scribed.
