HORSE-BLANKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,376, dated March 17, 1891.

Application filed October 10, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY IV. SlssoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monmouth, in the county of Varren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Blankets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this specification; and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a plan view of the innerside of the blanket, showing one corner turned over and a portion of the strips which confine the elastic straps thereto broken away. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view taken on line of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a de tail view in perspective of one of theelastic straps and its connections, and Fig.4 a crosssection taken on line y 3 of Fig. 1.

The present invention has for its object to provide a blanket for horses that will possess both strength and durability and prevent its being torn while on the animal and the fastening devices pulled off, which object I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the blanket, which may be of any suitable material and of any desirable size and shape, and has the usual crupper-strap B, and at its center is the stay or re-enforce piece 0, which may be on one or both sides of the blanket, which materially adds to the strength thereof.

Upon the under side of the blanket are elastic straps D E, and these straps it should be understood are not stitched or otherwise similarly secured to the blanket; but are held in place thereon by confining-strips F of canvas or other suitable material, which are stitched to the blanket along their edges with their ends left open, so that the elastic straps will pass through. It will be seen that the straps D E are not held in place, except bythe strips F, and are free to work between the strips and the blanket, and any strain upon the straps will have no effect upon the elastic to injure it by the tearing away of the stitches, as no Serial No. 367,679. (No model.)

stitching is used. Consequently the straps will be rendered more durable and lasting and much more effective for the purpose intended.

The blanket is cut away to form a neck portion, and around the edge thereof is an elastic strap G, which, similar to the straps hereinbefore described, is held in place by a confining-strip F,stitohed to the blanket. To the ends of these elastic straps are connected, respectively, buckles a and tongues 12, or other suitable andwell-known means may be employed to fasten the blanket to the animal; but the buckles and tongues shown are deemed most preferable. A buckle connected to a short elastic strap and also a tongue, as shown at c (I, may be employed as additional. means for securing the blanket around the neck of the animal.

In order to limit the strain upon the elastic straps, theyare connected to non-elastic checkstraps H, of a length somewhat longer than the elastic straps, so that the latter will not be stretched a greater distance than the length of thecheck-straps, thereby providing additional security against undue wear and strain upon the elastic.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A horse-blanket provided with means for fastening it to the animal, consisting of elastic straps held to the blanket wholly by confining-strips stitched to the blanket along their edges, whereby the straps will move bodily between the blanket and strips, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a horse-blanket, elastic straps held to the blanket wholly by con fining-strips stitched to said blanket along their edges, in combination with non-elastic check-straps connected to the elastic straps at their ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a horse-blanket provided with re-enforce pieces, as shown and described, the combination of elastic fastening-straps held to the blanket wholly by confining-strips, which are stitched to said blanket along their edges,

whereby the straps will move bodily between the blanket and strips, buckles and tongues IOO upon the ends of the fastening-straps, and nonelastic check-straps connected to said elastic straps, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4:. Ablanket provided with means for securing it on the animal, consisting of a erupper-strap, elastic straps extending crosswise of the blanket and around the neck portion thereof, said straps having non-elastic checkstraps connected to the elastic straps and of greater lengththan the latter, confining-strips for holding the straps on the blanket and admitting of their moving bodily, and buckles and straps connected to the ends of the straps, respectively, substantially as and for the purpose described.
