BOOT FOR ANIMALS.
ioness.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jung 3Q, 1 am,
Application filed May 12, 1913. serial No.76'7fi79.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HENRY VVALTER Asoo'r SALTER and JAMES OLIVER SAL'rEn, subjects of His Majesty the King of England, residing at Aldershot, in the county of Hants, Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots for Animals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boots for animals and has for its object to provide an improved boot, a boot and bandage combined or a bandage for the use of polo ponies, hunters, and other like horses. l-litherto bandages have been made comprising a pad and a wrapper covering the back of the pad, said wrapper having narrow stifi'ened edges turned over to grip the outer edges of the pad.
According to our invention the boot consists of a fabric square or other shaped wrap or back piece, adapted to be secured on the lower part of the animals legs by means of one or more tapes, straps or other fastening means, and having on its inner or leg contacting side folds or overlapping flaps adapted to entirely inclose a suitable quantity of cotton, wool or other padding which may be readily adjusted, as well as removed and renewed When desired.
e will now describe our invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a broken elevational view of the preferred form of a combined boot and bandage; Fig. 2 is a reverse view of part of the device shown in Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and t show two forms of a boot; Fig. 5 is a broken view of a bandage; and Fig. 6 is reverse view of part of the bandage shown in Fig. 5.
In the preferred form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the shoe or boot proper comprises a soft fabric or felt square or back piece on having a lower portion of padded or unpadded fabric 6 adapted to fold either around the cannon and pastern bones of the animal or around the large metacarpal bone and cannon bone. Sewn or otherwise suitably attached to each of the four edges of the fabric square or felt piece a are folds or flaps o of fabric which are adapted to be folded down and overlap each other on to the fabric or felt square to inclose the required cottonwool or other padding (Z, and this padding may obviously be shifted or adjusted as to its position in or on the area covered by said flaps, and may, also, be removed and renewed when necessary.
A long length of fabric webbing or woolen binding a forming the bandage is secured to one side of the fabric square or wrap a preferably in an angular manner and this webbing or woolen binding, is provided at its free end with one or more suitable tapes, straps, or other fastening means f for securing the whole boot and bandage in place after it has been wound around the animals leg. We may if desired replace the fabric of which the article is made by leather or other suitable material as may be found most suitable or durable for any particular use.
The boots shown in Figs. 3 and 4 each comprise a soft fabric or felt back piece or wrap a which is secured in place by the straps f and buckles g secured on the back piece a preferably by means of the elastic webbing or pieces h. The backs or pieces a are provided with padding and covering folds or flaps on their reverse sides in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and (3 the bandage comprises a long length or bind ing 0 of fabric, webbing or other suitable material, securing straps f and buckles g, padding (Z, and covering flaps 0, adapted to entirely inclose the padding d.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A boot for protecting the legs of polo ponies, hunters and the like, comprising a back piece adapted to be wrapped around the lower portion of the animals leg and provided upon its leg-contacting side with a plurality of flaps arranged to be removably folded upon one another in overlapping relation, padding adjustably and removably arranged against said leg-contacting side and completely covered by said flaps, and means for fastening the said back piece in place.
2. A boot for protecting the legs of polo ponies, hunters and the like, comprising a strip of flexible material adapted to be wrapped around the lower portion of the animals leg and provided upon its leg-contacting side with a plurality of flaps arranged to be removably folded upon one ansigned this specification this 21st day of other in overlapping relation, padding -ad- April, 1913.
