AUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN J. EIsHEE, oF PAcKEEToN, INDIANA.
LAN D-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 340,437, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed May 9, 1885. Renewed March 11, 1886. Serial No. 194,853. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that LSTEPEIEN J. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Packerton, in the count-y of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land'Rollers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whieh'it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is arepresentatiou of a plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line w x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one of the rollers. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the heads.
This invention has relation to land-rollers and elod-crushers; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the frame of the landroller and elod crusher. B designates the beam intermediate of the end beams of the frame. This beam B is made zigzag, or in two sections, B B, which are so placed that two only1 of their faces are in line, and this sectional beaui connects the front, intermediate, and rear cross or transverse beams of the frame. The ends of the transverse beams are connected to the end beams of the frame by mortise-and-tenon joints. The bearing-plates E, in which are formed the bearings for the journals ofthe rollers and crushers, are secured in place by bolts, so that they may be readily removed to pnt in or take out the rollers when necessary. rlhis form of frame requires that two of the rollers be made longer than the other two, by reason of the fact that the sectional beam has only two of its vertical faces in the same line. In other respects the rollers or crushers are alike in construction, and ,a description of one will answer for all four.
The roller D D D2 D3 and Crusher consists of two cast-Inetal'heads, DtDf, having peripheral projections E, preferably eight in number, but the number may be varied, and increases with the size of the roller. On their inner faces these heads are provided with grooves F, for the reception of the bars G, of wood, which form the body or barrel of the roller, which is hollow. The ends of the staves or bars G enter grooves F in the inner faces of the metal heads D4 D5, and headed bolt-rods H, with nuts, may be employed to connect the heads and bars which comprise the roller together. By this construction the rollers act as anchors, pulverizers, and rollers, and their arrangement, in connection with the sectional middle beam and the fact that two are longer than the two others, permits the strip ofgrouud usually left between the ends ofthe rollers to be rolled, crushed, and pulverized.
The usual draft attachments are provided for drawing the machine over the field.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The combination, with the cast metal heads having peripheral projections and grooves in the inner faces, of the `'hars or staves G, and the securing rods and nuts, and journals on their outer faces, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the cast metal heads having peripheral projections, grooves in their inner faces, and journals projecting from their outer faces, of the bars or staves G and thesecuringrods and nuts connecting the heads and staves, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses;
STEPHEN J. FISHER'.
