SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,161, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed September 19, 1889. Serial No. 324,439, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known-that I, JAMES W. EARDLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oascade, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land Rollers and Pulverizers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a land-roller and soil-pulverizer; and the object of my invention is to produce a cheap, durable, and substantial implement having two rollers j ournaled in the same frame for convenience in operation, each roller having a corrugated periphery adapted to break up clods and press down the soil evenly and firmly, and the surface of which said rollers may be renewed whenever worn out without any change in the other parts of the structure. I accomplish these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and hence my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts described, and more specifically pointed out in the claims. The rollers R are inclosed in a frame having sills A and cross-beams B B, to which is attached a tongue 0. The drivers seat S is mounted over the rollers upon a frame having posts D and bars E. A metallic bar F is secured to the beams B and arranged edgewise between the rollers, and supports abearing 0, through which the axle lWI passes. The ends of F are twisted at N to adapt them to the flat sides of B, and are provided with holes to receive the bolts by which they are secured to said beams.
Gr represents the end bearings for the axle M, and is secured to sills A.
Each of the rollers R is constructed of a series of reversible wooden staves L, arranged in the general form of acylinder. Each stave is diamond shape in cross-section, and has its ends beveled, and, being arranged side by side about equidistant from the axis of the cylinder, with the edges outward, forms the corrugated periphery of the cylinder. The ends of said cylinders are constructed of a metallic head H, cast integral, havingv a notched periphery corresponding to the end of the cylinder, and corrugated flanges P P, arranged on the inside face of the rim, forming a chain or row of sockets p 19, adapted to receive the beveled ends of the staves L, which are made a little large for the sockets, so that when the heads are drawn together by the tie-bolts K they will fit very tightly.
The heads H have arms H adapted to spokes I, to which they are firmly bolted by bolts J. The same axle M passes through both cylinders at the intersection of the spokes I and through the bearing 0. Thus, while both the cylinders are secured in the same general frame, each cylinder has a frame of its own, and although both revolve about the same fixed axle, each revolves independently of the other, and when one side or edge of the staves has become much used, by removing the tiebolts K they may be easily reversed and the other side used.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a land-roller, the roller-cylinder R, having a corrugated periphery, consisting of staves L, arranged as described, and composed of the metallic heads H, having the corrugated rims and flanges P P, intermediate staves L, spokes I and tie-bolts K, arranged as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a land-roller, the roller-cylinder R, composed of the metallic heads H, havinga corrugated periphery, arms H, and spokes I, secured to said arms, and corrugated flanges P P, intermediate wooden staves L, (diamondshaped in cross-section.) having their ends beveled and arranged side by side about equidistant from the axis of said cylinder to form the corrugated periphery thereof, and tie-bolts K, for securing the heads and staves together, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a land-roller composed of two separate cylinders R, united together, each of which has a corrugated periphery and is composed of two metallic heads with corrugated peripheries, and intermediate Wooden staves diamond-shaped in cross section arranged about equidistant from the axis for and forming the periphery of the cylinder, having beveled ends adapted to sockets arranged in the side of the rim of said metallic heads, and tie-bolts K, passing longitudinally through said cylinders parallel with the axle for securing the staves and heads together, of an axle M, secured to a frame A B in a bearing G, and a bar F, supporting a bearing 0, arranged between said cylinders, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in aland-roller, of the frame having sills A, cross-beams B, and a tongue 0, and an axle M, secured in a bearing G, attached to sills A, and two rollers R, consisting of metallic heads H, with corrugated peripheries, rims provided with flanges P P, forming sockets p, and arms H, spokes I, secured to said arms, staves L, diamond-shaped in cross-section, with beveled ends adapted to flanges P P, tie-bolts K, for securing said ends and staves together, bearing-bar F, and bearing 0, arranged between said cylinders, substantially as herein set forth.
5. In a land-roller, and in combination,-a frame A A B B 13, bar F, arranged edgewise,
and supporting bearing 0 and secured to beams B, the axle M, secured in said frame, bearings G, secured to said sills A, and rollers R, consisting of the metallic heads H, having corrugated peripheries, and provided with corrugated flanges P P, forming sockets p, staves L, diamond-shaped in cross-section, and having their ends beveled to adapt them to sockets p, tie-bolts K, for securing heads and staves together, arms H, spokes I, secured by bolts J, and a seat S, supported on frame D E, arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
