CLOD CRUSHER AND PULVERIZER.
ELPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,391, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed January 13,1886. Serial No. 158,392. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Tnnononn FnnnLiNe. Hui-sun Bruins, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Meudon, inthe county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvernentsin Glod Crushers and Pulverizers; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my iniproved clod Crusher and pulverizer. Fig. 2 is a vertical axial section of the same. Fig. 3 1s a vertical section on line .t m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4t
is a perspective detail view of the adjustable seat and foot-rest, and Fig. 5 is a similar view ot' one of the cutters.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Myinveution has relation to that class of clod Crushers and pulverizers in which a uumber of cutters are pivoted with their ends in wheels mounted upon an axle, the wheels and cutters i'orining cylinders, which are j ournaled similarly to a land-roller; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the saine, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicatesa rectangular frame having thetongue B projecting through its middle and projecting forward, the inner end of the tongue dividing the frame. A nutted bolt, G, passes through a perforation, D, in the rear end of the tongue, and has aslotted and iianged plate, E, sliding upon its upper end, the said plate having downwardly-projecting flanges F F at the forward ends of its side edges, while the remaining portions of the side edges of the plate are formed with upwardly-projecting ilanges G G, the dowuwardlyproj ecting flanges fitting upon the sides of the tongueand retaining the plate in its proper position upon the upper side of the tongue. The rear end ofthis plate is provided with a cross-head, H, which forms a foot-rest, and the'seat l for the driver is secured upon aspring-support, J, which has its lower end bent rearward and formed with a longitudinal slot, K, which fits upon the nutted bolt, the said rearwardly-bent end fitting between the upwardly-projecting anges at the sides ofthe slotted plate. Abolt or axle, L, passes through the fralne, fitting with its ends in the side pieces of the frame, and two pairs ot' wheels. M M, arejournaled upon this aXle-onepair at each side oi the inner end of the tongue. These wheels are secured together by means of bolts N, the screw-threaded ends of which pass through the spokes of a pair of Wheels, and are provided with nutsO upon the inner and outer sides of the wheels, which nuts clamp the wheels upon the ends of the bolts. The rims of these wheels are provided with a number of transverse perforations, P,
into which the journals or trunnions Q of the cutters R are pivoted, the said cutters having their sharp edges projecting to one side of the journals. The inner edges of these cutters, which are flush with the journals, are provided each with an obliquely-projecting cog or arm, S, and the free ends ot'tliese arms may bear against the rear side of the inner portions ofthe adjoining cutters and agai ust the inner or rear faces of each other, so as to force a number ofthe cutters to stand at the same angle to the periphery of the wheels when one cutter is tilted to this angle.
The cutters all fold or tilt to one side, and it will be seen that when the implement is drawn in one direction, so that the cutters will have their sharp edges pointing downward upon the forward sides of the cylinders, the said cutters will cut and break all the clods which they may encounter upon the ground, the sharp edges coming directly down upon the clods, while by reversing the cylinders upon the axle, which mayeasily be done by removing the axle and raising and reversing the frame, the dat sides of the cutters will strike the ground, causing the cylinders to act as common rollers.
The lateral play ot the cutters between theA wheels may be adj usted by adjusting the wheels upon the rods by means of the nuts, and the wheels may be separated sufficiently to remove the cutters or to insert cutters by means of the nuts being unscrewed from the rods.
The scat may be adjusted so as to cause the IOO weight of the driver to counterbalance the weight of' thetongue and to remove this weight from the neck-yoke and from the necks of the draft-animals, and the foot-rest may be adj usted with the seat and independent of the seat, allowing it to be adjusted closer to and farther from the seat according to the length of the legs of the driver. p
The downwardlyprojecting side anges of the foot-rest plate guide the said plate upon the rear end of' the tongue, and the upwardlyprojecting flanges upon the sa me plate guide the rearwardlyhent slotted end ol' the seatsupport.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. Ina @lod-Crusher and soilpulverizer, the combination of wheels having transverselyperforated rims, and suitably jonrnalcd in a frame, with cutters having journals or trunnions fitting in the perf'orations ofthe wheels projecting from the ends of their inner edges, and having obliquely-projeetiug arms upon the said inner edges, as and for the purpose shown and set forth` 2. ln a clod-crnsher and soil-pulvcrizer, the combination of' a frame having a tongueprojecting from it and dividing it in two halves by its rear end, an axle fitting in transverse perforations in the side pieces of the frame and through the rear portion of the tongue, wheels having their rims transversely perforated and journaled in pairs upon the axle, being secured at their proper distance from l each other by means of nutted bolts passing through the spokes ofthe wheels and bearing upon both sides of the spokes with the nuts, and cutters having journals projecting from the ends of the inner edges, fitting in the perforations in the wheels, and having obliquelyprojecting arms projecting from their inner edges, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
8. In a oloderusherand soil-pulverizer, the
4 combination of a frame having the rear end of the tongue dividing it and formed with a vertical perforation at the rear end, a plate having a foot-rest at its rear end, ,and having a longitudinal slot and upwardly projecting `fianges at its side edges, and downwardly-projecting guide-flanges at the forward ends, of its side edges clamping the sides of the rear end ofthe tongue, a seat support having its lower end bent rearward and slotted longitudinally, fitting between the upwardly-projecting flanges of the foot-rest plate, and a nutted bolt fitting into the perforation of the tongue and having its upper headed end securing the slotted end of the seatsupport and the slotted foot-rest plate, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
