(No Model'.)
J. F. WINGHELL. ADJUSTABLE LEG FOR FOBGES,
No. 326,006. Patented Sept. 8, 188,5.
'INVENTOR S E S S E N H W A ATTORNEYS N. PETERS. Photn-Ullwgnpher. Willlingkm. DJ;
or cylindrical portion of the UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. W'INCHELL, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOOS MANUFAGTURIN G COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE LEG FOR FORGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,006, dated September 8,1885. Application filed January 15,1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. WINOHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg-Fastenings for Forges, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side View of a forge, showing niy device. Fig. 2 is a side view of theleg and part of the forge. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4. is a side view of part of the forge, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional detail View.
This invention has relation to means for securing cylindrical legs to cast -iron forges and other heavy articles; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth,.and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of a cast-iron forge, which is made with the short or stub bea rings B projecting downward from its bottom portion. At the lower part of each bearing or projection B a half-socket, c, is formed by a lateral flange, d, which is an extension of the outer stubor projection B on one side. The flange d is concave on the inside and extends to the bearing-shoulder 0, which may be hollowed out in socket form, if deemed desirable.
F indicates the upper end of a cylindriform I leg, which is placed in the half-socketcagainst the inner or concave side of the curved lateral flange, d, and is secured in this position by the clamping-band G. The front of the band G is curved in concave form on its inside bearing-surface h, to fit against that portion of the end of the leg which is exposed in the halfsocket c in a neat and secure manner. The back portion,k,of the band extends around the flange d'of the stub Bloosely, and is provided with a threaded perforation, Z, to receive a setscrew, 8. When said set-screw is turned up hard, the leg becomes securely clamped by the band to the flange of the stub B. The clamp ing-band is made broad enough to engage with its upper edgethe shoulder of the stub, so that there will be no "undue strain on the flange. Should the legs of the forge be found to rest unevenly on the floor, it is the work of a moment to loosen the clamping-band and adjust the leg, which requires to be brought down.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The halfsocket bearing formed by the stub B and its curved flange 0, extending downward from one side to serve with aleg and clamping device,substantially as specified. 2. The combination, with the half -socket stub B having the lateral flange d and the shoulder e, of the clamping-band G and its set-screw s, substantially as specified. In testimony whereof I aft-ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES F. WIN GHELL.
