Z. D. MORROW. ADJUSTABLE STOVE GASTER. I
No. 49956.1 Patented June 13, 1893.
. side.
I UNITED, STATES PATENT O FICE.
ZACHARIAH D. MORROWV, OF FRANKLIN, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE STOVE-CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,561, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed February 25. 1893. Serial No. 463,724- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZACHARIAH D. MORROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stove-Gasters; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a caster which canbe readily applied to any stove leg so that the stove may be easily moved. This object I accomplish by the use of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the invention consists in certain novel features of the same hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings just referred to Figure 1 is a side view of a caster provided with my improvements, showing it in its operative position. Fig. 2 is afront View of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views, and Fig. 5 is a view of a modification.
The caster rollers A are of the usual or any preferred construction and need not be particularly described herein.
The base plate'B, upon which the rollers are hung, is provided at its rear end with an upwardly turned quadrangular projection or flange O which is adapted to fit snugly against the rear concave side of the stove leg as shown in Fig. 1. At about the center of the base plate, on the upper side of the same, I provide the perforated ear or lug D having a series of radial notches or grooves E in one To this car or lug I secure a brace or standard F which is provided at its. lower end with a series of radial projections or ribs G adapted to engage the notches or grooves E. It is obvious that by varying the engagement of these ribs and grooves the brace or standard can be adjusted to any desired angle; it is held in its adjusted position by means of a bolt I-I, inserted through the lug D and the end of the brace, and athumb nut I mounted on the end of the bolt and adapted to be turned home against the side of the lug. The upper end of the'brace or standard is made U-shape or provided with diverging arms J which, in practice, pass on opposite sides of the stove leg and thereby prevent the brace slipping therefrom.
At the rear end of the base plate, I provide the lip K in which athumb screw L is mounted and on the front end of the said screw I swivel a nut or binding plate M, as shown. This binding plate is adapted to be turned up against the stove leg and aid in holding the caster thereto, as will be readily understood, but its presence is not absolutely necessary and it may be omitted or dispensed with if desired. This modified construction is illustratedin Fig. 5.
The manner of using the caster will, it is thought, be readily comprehended. One cornor of the stove is lifted slightly by means of any convenient lever and the caster placed in position under the stove leg. If the stove be now lowered, the leg will pass between the brace and the quadrangular flange will prevent'the caster from slipping rearward away from the base plate while the brace or standard will eifectually prevent slipping in any other direction so that when acaster has been applied to the leg at each corner, the stove will be firmly supported and can be easily moved about.
My device is very simple and will prove of great value to stove merchants in displaying their goods and to house keepers in moving stoves for house cleaning purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stove caster having its base plate provided with a flange to engage the rear side of the stove leg, and having a brace adjustably secured upon thebase plate and adapted to engage the front side of the stove leg.
2. A stove caster having its base plate provided with a flange to bear against the rear side of the stove leg, and having a brace rising from its base plate and provided with diverging arms to engage the sides of the stove leg.
3. In a stove caster, the combination of the base plate having a flange to engage the stove leg and a lug provided with radial grooves in its side, a brace adapted to engage the stove leg and provided with radial ribs adapted to engage said grooves, a bolt inserted through the lug and the end of the brace, and a thumb nut mounted on the end of the bolt.
4. In a stove caster, the combination with the base plate, of a brace rising therefrom, and a screw mounted on the base plate and having a binding plate swiveled on its front end.
5. In a stove caster, the combination with the base plate, of a brace rising therefrom and engaging the front side of the stove leg,
a curved flange bearing against the rear side 1 5 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in 20 presence of two witnesses.
ZAOI-IARIAI-I D. MORROW.
