Description

(Mode1.)
A. O. SISSON.
SHUTTER WORKER AND PASTENER.
Patented Jan. 1, 1884.1
PATENT OFFICE.
ASA O. SISSON, OF EASTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHUTTER WORKER A N D FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 291,101, dated January 1, 1884.
Application filed May-10, 1853. (Model) To all whom it may concern Beit knownthat I, Asa O. SIssoN, of Easton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating and Locking Shutters and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specifiation, in which- Figure 1 is'a sectional side elevation of the window-frame and the shutter, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section through Fig; 1, taken in the horizontal plane indicated by the dotted line at w thereon. Fig.
3 is a perspective view of my double locking toothed plate. Fig. 4 is aview of the toothed segment withits single-throw cam. Fig. 5 is a face View of the locking-toe and its slide.
This invention relates to devices for opening and closing shutters from the inside of an apartment; and it consists in means which are especially adapted for opening and closing shutters, and for locking them whether they be open or shut, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
A designates a window or door frame, and B is a shutter adapted for closing the opening through the frame, which shutter is sustained by the usual well-known hinges, that I letter O. I will here state that the pintle of the lower hinge may have a pin through it for the purpose of preventing displacement of the shutter. Ordinarily the weight of the shutter itself will keep it down on its hinge-joints.
D designates a beveled toothed segment, the angular plate D of which is secured to the shutter B. On top of this toothed segment D are notched offsets e e,which are so constructed that the portions a thereof are higher than the engaging portions, for the purpose of forming stops, the object ofwhich will presently appear. The teeth of the beveled toothed segment D engage wit-h the teeth of another segment, E, the axis of which is usually horizontal, and the post F of which passes through a plate, G, a plate, H, and the window-frame having aprismatic or'other shaped end adapted to receive a removable key, K. The post F may have a key or lever rigidly and permanently fixed to it; but ordinarily I prefer to have a prismatic end on the said post, and to terminate the same flush, or nearly so,with the inside of the casing, using as an ornamental covering for the same a frame, J, having flaring opening I), and a pivoted gravitating cover, 0, for said opening.
It will be seen that by constructing the frame J with a flaring opening (such frame affording a metal bearing for the post F) a key is readily adjusted on the prismatic end of the post.
The toothed segment E is constructed with a single-throw cam, E, which is adapted to work between two studs, 9 g, protruding from and rigid with the plate G. The plate G is vertically slotted and so connected to the plate H (which is a bearing-plate) that the plate G is allowed a free vertical or endwise movement. Now, it will be seen by reference to my drawings that I construct on the sliding plate or locking edge of whichis perpendicular, or nearly so, to the face of said plate G. It will be seen that the cam E acts directly on the plate Gboth in opening and closing a shutter,
the shutter is fully open or when it is closed it will be locked by reason of the toe L being moved down into one or the other of the notches formed in the offsets of the toothed segment D, by the operation of the cam E on the studs of the slide to which is applied the said toe L.
It is obvious from what I have above described that I have a contrivance by means of which I can look a window-shutter open or closed, and that the device which I have explained is,in fact,a lockto wit, when the shutter is either fully open or fully closed and the key is removed from its post, the shutter cannot be moved from the position in which it was locked without breaking or impairing some part or parts of the lock.
It will be seen by reference to the toothed segment E, which is on the key -post, that ithas at its termini a shoulder, p,which is in the keysocket, a prismatic end to receive the key, and a toothed segment and cam, all of which are adapted for allowing the shutter to be opened and closed by means of a key.
Having thus fully described my invention,
G a double-beveled locking-toe, L, the lower and that the parts are so adjusted that when what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a shutter fastener, the combination of the key-post, the cam and toothed segment thereon, the flanged vertically-movable plate having a locking-toe, and the toothed segment having notches to receive said toe, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of a face-plate rigidly secured to the window-frame, a key-post having a single throw cam and an oscillating toothed segment on one end. a vertically-sliding flanged plate having a lockingtoe formed on this plate, and a toothed segment having a notched top, which is-rigidly secured to the shutter, and adapted to engage with the said oscillating toothed segment and the toe of the witnesses.
