IMPROVEMENT IN PANELING STONE.
Specification forming'part of Letters Patent No. 215,457, dated May .0, 1879; application filed March 24, 1879.
i To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY B. J AGKSON, of Petaluma, county of Sonoma, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Paneling Stone; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a novel method of paneling; stone-work, and it is especially applicable to monuments, columns, and other ornamental work Where it is desirable to attach lighter or darker shades of stone to each other.
This is especially applicable to monuments or columns which are to receive inscriptions, and it enables me to employ a stone for the body of the monument which would be too dark to make the inscription legible, while the lighter stone panel serves to receive the inscription.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a view of a block representing a monument with its attached panel. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, showing the manner of attaching the panel.
A is a block, which may represent a monument-column, or other ornamental stone structure. In many cases these monuments would be preferably made of superior qualities of granite or other stone which would be too dark to allow an inscription to be easily legible, and this prevents the use of such stone.
My improvement consists in securely fixing to the monument or other structure a panel or panels, B, of some lighter-colored stone. This I do by cutting out a shallow chamber or depression, C, in the block A. One or more projecting ridges, D, are formed across this depression and inclined upward, as shown. The panel B is made to fit into this depression, and has a groove, F, made in it corresponding with the ridge D, and of a shape to be fitted upon and be held by this ridge.
This panel may be flush with the main body of the part A, or it may be raised or have any ornamental construction.
The panel is let into its place with any suitable cemcnt, and will be held as a part of the structure.
This construction enables me to unite stone of different colors or varieties in many orna-.
mental and useful ways, and without showing any joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The method herein described for uniting stone, consisting in forming the depression C, with its inclined ridge or ridges D, in combination with the panel B, with the groove F, fitted to the depression and ridge, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
TIMOTHY BERNARD JACKSON.
