B. ANDREWS;
' SAW.
Patented Apr. 7. 1885.
41 PUERS. pmoumriwr. via-mum" n c UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIc-E EMANUEL ANDREWS, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,374, dated April ,7 1885.
Application filed February 9, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMANUELANDREWS, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saws, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The improvements involved in this application relate particularly to means for removably attaching saw-blades to the frames of meat and metal saws, and to means for tightening and loosening such saw-blad es and the novelty lies in the construction and combined arrangement of such devices, together with the construction of the back or frame of the saw, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
To better comprehend my improvements and the manner of combining them with the saw blade and frame, attention is invited to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side View of the saw with a blade applied and tightened by devices constructed in accordance with my present invention; Fig. 2, details of these devices and the saw-blade; Fig. 3, a detail of the back or frame of the saw, and Fig. 4 a modification of the tightening device.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
A denotes the handle, and Aahandle casting, with an upper socket, a, and a lower socket, a all constructed and combined in a like manner to the same parts described and referred to in two applications of mine of even date herewith. B is the metal frame or back, of the usual form, having its rear end removably inserted in the upper socket, a, of the handle-casting A, and having its outer end, 0, made fiat, and provided with a set-screw or rivet, (1, having a head preferably of oblong shape. The saw-blade (l is provided near one end with an oblong slot or opening, 6; but if the head of the screw or rivet d on the outer end of the back or frame B be round, or of some shape other than oblong, then this slot or opening 6 should be made to correspond with the size and shape of the stem of such screw or rivet. The other end of this sawing, 9, and to attach a blade of this construction I employ a combined shank and link, D and E, respectively, as shown in Fig. 2. This shank D, which is to be inserted in the socket a on the lower end of the handle-casting A of the saw-handle,is screw-threaded externally on one end, and its stem or bodyis otherwise constructed as set forth in relation to the shank described in the applications hereinbefore mentioned. The head of this shank'D is biblade isprovided with a similar slot oropenfurcated or formed with two ears, y g, between whichis pivoted theloop or tongue E,to which one end of the blade is removably attached. This loop or tongue E is of a similar construction to the one described in one of the applications hereinbefore referred to-that is, it is preferably a casting formed with a. loop, f, having a flat extension, f, provided at or near its center with a set-screw or rivet, f which has a head corresponding with the shape of the slots 6 in the saw-blade, or a head made longerthan the diameter of said slots. This loop or tongue E is pivoted to its shank D by means of a bolt, E, passed through the ears 9 g and the loop f, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The saw-blade is applied to the frame or back B byattaching one end to its screw or rivetd through the me dium of the slot or opening 0 at this end, and the opposite end of the blade is applied to the handle-casting A by'attachment to the loop E through the medium of the screw or rivet f and slot or opening 6 in the ways suggested in one of the applications referred to. When this attachment has been made, and the shank D has been inserted in the socket a of the handle, a thumb or other tightening nut,
also be apparent that the head of the shank D could be somewhat changed by providing the same with slots out in the upper edges of its ears 9 g down to and communicating with the holes for the bolt E, as shown in Fig. 4. With this modification the loop E would be attached between the bifurcated head of the shank by mounting the bolt E in its bearings through the slots 9 9.
As before mentioned in one of the applications referred to, these attaching and tightening devices may be used with any style of frame and handle suitably adapted to properly accommodate them.
I am awarethat saw-blades with open slots near their ends for detachably securing sawblades to their frames are not new with me, and
I wish to disclaim the same, as such open slots naturally weaken such saw-blades, and I wish to obviate such objection by the use of closed slots in the ends of the saw-blades.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a saw of the character described, the combination of the sawblade 0, provided at one end with a closedv slot for removable attachment to the outer end of the frame, and a straining-shank, D, connected with the inner end of the frame and removably attached to the inner end of said blade, substantially as described.
2. In a saw of the character described, the combination of the back or frame having a flat outer end, the saw-blade 0, provided near each end 'witha slot, 6, the shank D, having a bifurdated head, the loop or tongue E, pivoted to the head of said shank, and screws or rivets for attaching the saw-blade to said back 13, and loop or tongue E, substantially as described.
3. In a saw of the character described, the combination of the handle A A, the back or frameB, having a flat outer end, 0, provided with a set-screw, d, having an oblong head, the saw-blade 0, provided with an oblong closed slot, 6, near each end, the shank D, having a bifurcated head and provided with a nut, D, and the loop or tongue E, its screw or rivetf and bolt E, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMANUEL ANDREVS.
