Description
J. N. DUDLEY 8v J. ANDERSON. Saw-Hand1e.
No. 191,256. Patented Nov. 20,1877
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES N. DUDLEY AND JOHN ANDERSON, OF PETROLIA, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197.256, dated November 20, 1877; application filed June 30, 1877.
represents a side elevation of our improved saw-handle, partly in section, on lineww, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The invention relates to a handle for long saws, to be used by one or two men, holding the saw with both hands, for cutting trees, timber, and other purposes; and the invention consists of a handle attached to the saw by binding-straps entering recesses of the saw-blade, and being secured to the handle and saw by a clamp-bolt, with lower crosspiece and upper second handle, or by a fastening-nut.
In the drawing, A A are the binding-straps, that are applied by ring-shaped ends to the handle D, and by end lugs a into corresponding top and bottom recesses of the sawblade C.
The straps A A are bound firmly to the handle and saw by a clamp-bolt, B, that bears by side cheeks on the saw 3 by a lower crosspiece, b, passed through a longitudinal slot, a, on the lower strap A; and by means of a second handle, B, that is screwed by a top nut on the upper extended end b of bolt B on the top strap A.
The second handle B is tightly screwed down on the strap, so as to rigidly lock the parts together, which may be quickly detached from the saw by turning the second handle in opposite direction.
The saw-handle may be attached to saws of any ordinary thickness and of any width by using a longer or shorter hand-piece below or opposite the end of saw. The saw-handle can also be inverted, and used either side up.
In place of the locking-handle B a fastening-nut may be screwed on the bolt B, for securing the handle to common hand or other saws, in which the second handle is not required.
The device is readily attached to the saw, and forms a strong, simple, and durable double or single handle for the same.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the binding-straps A A, fitted to saw 0 and handle D and having lower slot a, with the clamp-bolt B, having cross-piece b, extension I), and second handle B, screwed thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
