Description
(ModeL) O. L. CASE. PAPER HANGING IMPLEMENT;
Patented Mar. 31,1885,
DTVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR L. CASE, OF VVINDHAM, NEW YORK.
PAPER-HANGING IMPLEMENT.
EEPECIIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 31%,798, dated March 31. 1885.
Application filed January 5, 188 5. (Mode.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LOSOAR L. CASE, of Windham, in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Paper-Hanging Implement, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object the production'of an implement for use by paper-hangers which shall facilitate and expedite the laying and securing of wall-paper on the walls of rooms and other places; and. it consists in a novel device for the purpose, the same including certain peculiar constructions and combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter shown and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a rear view of the implement with a portion of a breadth or strip of wall-paper as carried by the same preparatory to the laying of the paper on the wall. Fig. 2 is a side view of the implement underlike conditions, showing its relation and that of the paper to the wall. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the paper as placed by the implement on the wall ready for pasting or securing it thereon, and Fig. 4'is a further like side view showing the implement in position for completing the laying and pasting of the paper on the wall.
The implementeonsists,in part,of two crossing or tongs-like levers, A B. the one, A, of which carries a side pivot, b, arranged to pass through a longitudinal slot, 0, in the other lever, B, at a short and suitable distance from the forward or paper-holding end of the implement. Attached to said end of said lever B is a cross-bar. d, on the opposite ends of which are secured two bent wire or other fingers or feet, 0 C, that project out in front and beyond the bar d, and that extend backward and are pivoted at their rear ends to the ends of a cross-presser bar, D, on the face side of the forward end or arm of the lever A, within or back of the bar d. This presser-bar D it is proposed to face with rubber or other soft or flexible material. Arranged in front of or beyond said presser-bar D, and connected with said bar and the lever A by a bent rod, 6, or
should also be covered with leather, rubber,
'or otherwise be constructed to present a soft and yielding surface.
To use the implement, which the operator holds by the back or handle end of the levers A B, the strip of paper P to be laid and pasted or cemented on the wall 7 of a room or other place is first passed at its upper end with the back or wall side of the main portion of the strip which hangs down in front facing the wall, and the levers A B closed to pinch the overlapping end of the paper in between the bar d and the roller E, in or during which closing action said levers, or, at least one of them, will also be moved longitudinally, bringing the pivot b on the lever A to the bottom of the slot 0 in the lever B. This operation of the implement not only serves to hold the one end of the paper while the latter is having the paste or cement applied to its back, or before laying the paper on the wall, but the closing of the levers throws the fingers or feet 00 out, or forward and upward, to adjust the upper end of the paper to its right position on the wall, but free from contact therewith, as shown in Fig. 2, the operator in the meanwhile continuing to clutch or hold the levers closed, and with his one hand keeping the lower or main portion of the paper away from the wall. The paper having thus been set or arranged to its proper position in relation with but free from contact with the wall, the operator still holding the levers A B closed, slightly cants the implement at its lower end toward the wall, so as to relieve the fingers or feet 0 O at its upper end from pressure on the wall, and so as to cause the presser-bar D to bear on the paper and press it on or against the wall. This causes the paper at or near its upper end to be held and pasted on the wall, as shown in Fig. 3; After these operations have been completed, the breadth or strip of paper throughout its whole length is ready to be laid and secured on the wall, which is quickly and readily done by the operator leaving loose the lever B or drawing it away from the wall and throwing up and back the lever A, which changes the position of the pivot b to the top of the slot 0 in the lever A, and not only further adjusts the fingers or feet- 0 O from contact with the paper, but also the presser-bar D, and throws thevroller E into contact with the paper, when or after which the implement is run down or over the paper by the roller E, to'press the pasted or cemented paper to the wall throughout the full length of the strip. From this description it will be seen that the implement first clamps by a jaw like action the one end of the strip of paper, next adjusts said strip to its place opposite to but not against the wall, then holds it at said end to its place on the wall, and finally completes the laying and securing of the strip throughout its entire length on the wall.
If found necessary,a shield may beinterposed between the roller E and cross-bar d to prevent any accumulation of or clogging with paste, should the operator neglect to wipe the exposed part.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an implement for laying and securing wall-paper to its place on the wall, the combination, with a pair of tongs-like or crossing levers and attached devices for pinching or clamping the one end of the strip of paper with ajaw-like action between them, of fingers or feet connected with said levers for adj ustingsaid end of the paper opposite to the place it is designed to occupy on the wall, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the crossing or tongs-like levers A B, of the cross-bar d, carried by the one of saidlevers, the roller E, connected with the other of said levers, and the fingers or feet 0 C, essentially as described.
, the paper opposite to its proper position on i the wall, a pressing device for holding the paper in place when so adjusted, and a laying length to the wall, as herein set forth.
' device for securing the paper throughout its 5 I l OSCAR L. CASE.
