Description

SIDING CL'AMP Filed April 15, 1926 Patented Nov. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES FREEMAN 'BAKER cUMMEn, or cABrzrAN, MANIToBA, CANADA Vsnmve cLAMr.
Appn'cafionfiieaAprn 15, 1926, smal No. v102,276, ami in canaria April 24,11925.7
The invention relates to a siding clamp es; pecially for carpenteris use in putting on siding and an object of the invention is to provide a tool which will draw siding boards together 5 and hold them for nailing. i
A further ob]I ect of the invention is to construct the tool in a simple, cheap, efficient and durable manner so that it can be adjusted to.
accommodate various widths of siding. V
VWVith the above more important objects in view the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claims, reference 15 being had to the drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the clampin 1 and a lower anchoring jaw 2. The shank.
of the clamping j aw is provided with inturned marginal portions aifording Vguides 3 and 11 between which the shank of the anchoring fl jaw 2 is slidably received. At their inner edges the guides 3 and 4 are provided with in-. tegral lug extensions and 6 projecting outwardly at right angles thereto.V The shank of v the anchoring jaw 2 is 'provided with spaced 33 longitudinally extending ribs 7 and 8 arranged to move freely between the guides 3 and 4. The ribs 7 and S are connected by bolt 9, link 10 and bolt 11 to the inner end of an operating lever 12 which is pivotally mount- 4' ed between the lugs 5 and 6 through the medium of the pivot bolt 13. The pivoted end of the lever 12 is preferably bifurcated to provide a recess 14 for the reception of thel at-' tached end of the link 10. The point of coni: nection between the ribs 7 and' 8 and the link 10 may be varied by providing the ribs with a plurality of holes 15 in which the bolt 9 may be selectively engag'ed.
In explaining the operation of the tool, siding boards are generally made with a tongue ltre.
and grooves and ordinarily are quite easily put together. Quite often, however, due tol various causes, such as warplng of the boards,
.difficulty is experienced in getting Vthem to'- Vgether as the warp makes a bulge at'the cen- The tool will straighten out the warped' board if used as follows:
The anchoring jaw is caught on the lower part'of the last siding. board that has been nailed. The extended clamping jaw is then placed over the tongue of the siding board next to be nailed. A downward pressure of 'the operating lever pressesthe siding board;
tightly into place :where it can very easily be heldwhile the operator nails iton.
The intense pressure Vdeveloped betweenff' the jaws will obviously straighten out any warped board.
What I claim as my' invention is 1. A siding clamp comprising an anchoring jaw provided with a flatextending. shank the lever to the` shank of the anchoring jaw. 2. A siding-clamp comprising an anchoring jaw and a flat shank extending at right angles to thejaw and provided at the` side I i remotefromthe jaw with lengthwise extend- 1ing, Vcentrally located, reinforcing ribs, a I
clamping jaw Opposing the anchoring ljaw and provided with a flatlextending shank .fitted with marginal guides slidably receiv-v ing thev edges of the shank of the anchoring jaw and having the guidesfextended toform a pair of Opposing spaced lugs,anoperating 'lever pivotally attached to the lugs and a link connected to the inner end of the lever and pivotall)T and adjustably attached to the ribs.
3. A siding clamp comprising a pair of jaws provided with flat shanks arranged in lOverlapping sliding engagement, spaced lugs carried by and extending at right' angles to v one of said' shanks, spaced ribs carried by the other shank and provided with a plurality of registerng holes, a lever pvotally secured between said lugs, af link having one end extendng between the lugs and pivotally seoured to said lever and a bolt passing through the other end of the link and through selected reg sterng openngs of the rbs.
