To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR F. BOSWORTH, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear. and exact description of the same.

My invention is an improved button adapted for use as a sleeve or collar button and like purpose. It is of that class in which the shoe is pivoted upon the post, and is adapted to turn aside from the center of the shoe when the latter is turned for introducing it into or removing from the button-hole.

The invention consists in details of construc tion, hereinafter described, the objects ofwhich are to provide a securelyhinged connection between the post and the shoe with economy in the manuacture.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the post and shoe in perspective. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the post and the bearing and spring plates. Fig. 3 shows a transverse section on post and shoe, taken centrally through both.

The post is a flat bar tapering preferably from the button to the shoe, and may be struck out of sheet metal to the proper thickness. The smaller end is turned aside at right an- 0 gles to the main part, forming an offset, a, which is provided with two journal-pins, l 1. These may be formed when the post is struck out, and the offset afterward formed by bend ing the end. I prefer to use a bottom plate consisting of a disk of thin elastic metal, b, Fig. 2. On this I place a disk, 0, Fig. 3, which is made a little thicker, preferably, than the other, and is provided with an opening cut through the'metal, adapted exactly-to receive 40 the offset with its pins or journals 1 1, and

when these are set into the opening accurately the post stands vertically in the center of the disk 0. Above this I place another disk, (I, of thin elastic sheet metal, having an opening, 4 5 2, and slits cut from one end of the opening,

which allows the metal on the sides of the opening to spring up when the post is turned. This is placed over the plate 0, witha longer side of the opening lying across the pins or journals of the post, so that these pins extend under the elastic sides. Over these three plates a cap, 6, is placed, and its edges are spun or pressed down, so as to hold them closely together. The offsets of the post and its journals are lodged in the cavity ofthe disk 0, and the journals are held securely between the upper and lower plates. These journals are square in cross-section, and when the post is turned their corners slowly spread the springdisk in turning, the plates pressing against the sides of the journals, when the post is either at right angles or parallel with the face of the shoe, and thus in those positions the shoe is held with sufficient force.

The parts described are cut out of sheet 6 metal, and the opening, when formed, is strong and secure in its action.

As thejourna-ls are on one side of the center, the shoe turns on this center, and is thus more easily inserted through or removed from the button-hole.

I am aware that a post formed with journals aside from the center and clamped beneath a spring plate is not new.

I claim as my invention The combination of the post formed with an offset and journals 1 1, a disk, 0, provided with the opening for the right-angular offset with its journals, the T-shaped opening for the journals being on one side ofthe center, a disk, d, having an opening and slits, as described, placed over the disk 0, a suitable disk below the disk 0, and a suitable shell for the cover of the shoe, and holding the parts together, all substantially as described.
