To all whom 2'25 may Concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. LEI'IH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a buttoncomprising a button head, and a'base having memhere to detachably engage the head, and more particularly the invention relates to a button of theindicated character having a novel arrangement of resilient shanks, and a novel form of co-acting button head, the parts being so formed and arranged that the turning of the button head. through an angle relatively to the shanks, will serve to bring engaging members of the shanks into position to be entered or withdrawn from the button head.
The invention will be particularly. explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of the button head, and a side elevation of the base and shank, the device being shown applied; Fig. 2 is a front end view; Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, showing the elements in positions to be detached; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the base and its shanks; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modi fied form of thebase and shanks.
In forming a button in accordance with my invention, a separate button head of my improved detachable button is indicated generally by the numeral 10, the base by the numeral 11, and the shanks by the numeral 12, while 13 may indicate a portion of a garment to which the device is applied.
The button head 10 is adapted to receive the forward ends of theshanks, and is here shown as having a chamber 14 opening at the front end, there being an oblong slot 15 provided, leading from the back of the button head to the chamber 14. The inner wall 16 of the chamber 14 constitutes a shoulder at the forward ends of the oblong slot 15,
18, for engagement with the wall or shoulder 16 of the button head. The heads 17 are oblong, as seen in the end view, being tapered to a dull point in a way to present flattened sides, and said heads are disposed preferably, substantially parallel. The shanks are so spaced apart, and the heads are so positioned thereon, that the resiliency of the shanks will dispose the heads obliquely to the oblong slot 15, with the heads projecting respectively beyond the opposite side walls of the slot, as seen best in Fig. 2. The shanks are spaced a distance greater than the minor axis of the oblong slot. The button head 10 is adapted to be turned relatively to the shanks through a sufficient angle to bring the opposite side walls of the slot 15 into contact with the resilient shanks 12, and to press said shanks in opposite directions toward the majoraxis of the slot 15, and finally disposev the heads 17 in register with'the slot, for the entrance or removal of the said heads from the button head.
As seen in Fig. 1, the shanks 12 are given shanks are formed integral froma bar or wire, the base 11 being given bends to proa slight inclination toward each other, the r duoe reverse loops, the material being carried from the ends of the loops at theoutside of the base forwardly to constitute the shanks 12 formed with heads 17 presenting shoulders 18 the said shanks and heads being-the same as previously described. In entering the shank heads 17, 17 in the slot 15, the button head is placed against the said shank heads so that the points of the heads partially extend into the slot from the back, and a slight pressure endwise against the heads, together with a slight turning movement of the button head, will cause the shank heads to spring into position with the shoulders 18 or 18 engaging the bottom wall or shoulder 16 of the button head.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A detachable button comprising a member provided with a pair of resilient shanks having oppositely projecting heads, anda separable button head adapted to receive the shank heads and having an oblong slot for the passage of the shank heads, said.

2. A detachable button comprising a member provided with a pair of resilient shanks formed with oppositely-projecting heads tapered at their outer ends and presenting overhanging shoulders, and a separable but ton head adapted to receive the shank heads and having an oblong slot for the passage of the shank heads, said shank heads being disposed obliquely to and extending beyond the side walls of the slot, the shanks being adapted to yield to a turning movement of the button head to bring the shank heads in register with the slot.
A detachable button comprisinga member formed with a pair of resilient shanks having oppositely disposed heads each presenting an overhanging shoulder, and a button head adapted to receive the shank heads, said button head having means to engage the shanks by a turning movement and bend the same transversely to the direction in which the shank heads are disposed.
4. A detachable button comprisinga member formed with a pair of resilient shanks having heads laterally disposed in opposite directions, each head presenting an overhanging shoulder, and' a button head adapted to receive said shank heads and having an oblong slot for the passage of the said heads,
the side Walls of the slot by a turning move ment of the buttonhead serving to engage the shanks and force said shanks in opposite directions toward the major axis of the slot and into register with the latter.
5. A detachable button having spaced resilient shanks formed with approximately parallel heads and yieldable to bring the heads into approximate alinement by a movement sidewise of said heads, and a button head adapted to receive the headed ends of the shanks and formed with an oblong slot for the passage of the said heads, the resiliency of the shanks normally disposing the heads thereof obliquely to the entrance slot and respectively projecting beyond the opposite side walls of the slot, the button head being adapted to turn through an angle to engage the side Walls of the shanks and dlispose the shank heads in register with the s ot.
6. A detachable button comprising a member having a pair of resilient shanks each formed with a forwardly tapered oblong head, the heads projecting laterally from opposite sides of the resilient shanks, the shanks being adapted to yield in a direction transverse to the heads, and a button head having a chamber presenting an oblong entrance slot and an interior shoulder to engage the shoulders of the shank heads, the shanks being spaced a greater distance than the minor axis of the entrance slot, and the button being turnable relatively to the shanks to bring the side Walls of the slot into contact with the shanks and dispose the shank heads in register With the slot.
