IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45.40l. dated December 13, 1864.

To all whom t may concern..-

Beit known that I, PHrLiP W. GENGEM- BRE, ot' Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons and their Fastenings and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l .denotes a transverse section ot' a button and fastening made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view ot' the button or body part thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation ofthe stem and its catch. Fig. 4 is an inner side View of the back'plate ofthe button. Fig. 5 is another transverse section of the button and fastening taken ina plane. at right angles to the plane of section ot' Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a top view of the fastening catch ot' the button.

In carrying out my present invention or improvement I make use of a chanibered but ton-that is, one whose body is hollow, and is provided with a back-plate, the button-body under such circumstances being generally composed of two disks, a b, arranged together, as shown in the drawings, the larger ot' them being cancavo-convex. The back-plate or disk b has an oblong opening, c, made through it centrally. The said opening also goes through two jaws, c c, which project from the inner surface of the backA plate b, and are arranged with an interval, d, between them, such interval being disposed at right angles to or so as to cross the opening c. Over the jaws, and within the button-body, there is a bearingplate, e, between which and the disk a is a spiral spring, 7", or its equivalent, for forcing the plate toward the jaws.

The fasteningcatch A of the button is to be made as shown in Figs. l, 3, and 6, it having a head, g, a shank, h, and a foot, z', formed and a ranged as shown in such figures.

In connecting the said button to a garment or piece of cloth the catch A is irst to be pressed through the cloth or garment in such manner as to leave the head g drawn close up to the rear side of such garment or cloth; next, the foot of the catch should be inserted through the opening c and into the button and against the plate e next, the buttonbody should be pressed back upon the catch so as to contract the spring f suiciently to carry thc foot i of the catch beyond the jaws o of; next, either the button body or the catch should be rotated ninety degrees, after which the foot of the catch will be forced by the expansion of the spring f into the interval d between the jaws, which, having taken place, the catch will be locked to the button-body.

The process ot'separating the button-holy from the catch will be readily comprehended, it only being necessary to press the catch forward into the body, or the latter on the former, far enough to admit ot the catch on the body being revolved ninety degrees, when the spring will eject the catch and disengage it from the body.

It' desirable, an india-rubber washer or tube, or its equivalent, may be placed on the shank of the catch after the insertion of such shank in a garment or piece ot cloth, the said tube being made to encompass the-shank, and thus serve as a means ot' protecting a buttonhole from being worn or torn by the shank.

The internal spring, j', may be made ofmetal or any other proper material, and in some cases asimple spring alone, or withoutthe plate may be used to keep the catch in engagementwith the button-body while the same may be in wear or use on a garment.

What I claim as my invention or improre ment is The arrangement of the springf within the button-body, and with the jaws c o and the opening o thereof, or the equivalent or equivalents therefor, substantially as described.
