Description

SELF-LIGHTING CIGARETTE Filed Dec. 12, 1958 Arthur Kampff ZNVENTOR.
United rates Patent 2,997,045 SELF-LIGHTING CIGARETTE Arthur Kampif, Paterson, NJ (335 High Mountain Road, North Haledon, NJ.) Filed Dec. 12, 1958, Ser. No. 780,018 2 Claims. (Cl. 131-7) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in self-lighting cigarettes for use particularly although not necessarily, in the withdrawal igniting pack constituting the subject matter of my United States Patent No. 2,803,376, issued August 20, 1957.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a cigarette of the aforementioned character comprising an improved igniting head or tip of a novel construction whereby the lighting of the cigarette when it is removed from the pack will be positively ensured.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a self-lighting cigarette of the character described wherein the wrapper paper, when manufactured, is so formed that the igniting tip of the finished cigarette will be substantially conical or flared.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a selflighting cigarette of the character set forth which will be of comparatively simple construction, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an improved selflighting cigarette constructed in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in longitudinal section through the forward end portion of the cigarette, taken substantially on the line 2--2 of FIG- URE 1;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged perspective view of an end portion of a paper sheet from which the cigarette wrapper is formed; and
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the filler forming a part of the pack of the aforementioned US. Patent No. 2,803,376, in which the improved self-lighting cigarette of the present invention may be marketed.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a tubular wrapper 5 of suitable paper. The tubular wrapper 5 encloses a tobacco filler 6.
The wrapper 5 is cut from a sheet 7 (see FIGURE 3) of cigarette paper. The sheet 7 is produced in a paper making machine the rolls of which are shaped to provide a longitudinal marginal portion 8 which is tapered or substantially triangular in cross-section. The outer side of the portion 8 of the paper 7 is provided with a coating 9 of a suitable igniting material.
It is thought that the invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when the paper 7 is rolled to form the tubular wrapper "ice 5 of the finished cigarette, the elements 8 and 9 provide a substantially tapered or flared igniting head or tip 10 on one end of said cigarette. The wrapper 5 thus provides the base for the igniting material 9. In FIGURE 4 of the drawing, reference character 11 designates the filler of a package in which the cigarettes may be marketed, said filler comprising cells 12 for the reception of said cigarettes. The walls of the cells 12 are provided with an abrasive coating 13 of suitable material for frictional engagement with the igniting heads 10 of the cigarettes for lighting said cigarettes in an obvious manner as they are withdrawn from the package. The heads 10 fit snugly in the cells 12 to ensure good frictional contact with the walls thereof as the cigarettes are withdrawn. 7
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A manufactured ready-to-use self-lighting cigarette comprising a prescribed filler of smoking tobacco, a tubular wrapper made of cigarette paper tightly enclosing the filler, said wrapper being of uniform circular crosssection and inside diameter from end to end, a limited outer end portion of said wrapper being gradually and progressively increased in thickness and defining an outwardly flaring endless conical bead, said head rigidifying and reinforcing said outer end, the inward terminal edge portion of said bead merging with the exterior surface of said wrapper, and friction activated ignitable material completely coating said bead and rendering said outer end ignitable.
2. For use in manufacturing a self-lighting cigarette of a type which is adapted to be contained in and manually withdrawn from an abrasive coated cell embodied in a cellular type cigarette package, a wrapper of conventional size and regularly used cigarette paper, one lengthwise edge portion of said paper being gradually and progressively increased in thickness and being approximately triangular in cross-section and defining an outwardly flaring bead, and the exterior surface of said bead being coated with a thin film of ignitable material, that is, material which when subjected to forcible frictional contact with a relatively stationary abrasive surface, for example, said cell surface, ignites in a manner similar to striking and lighting a match.
