Description
Sept. 15, 1953 cHENG sHlo COMBINED CIGARETTE AND IGNITING MEANS Filed Oct. 1 5. 1950 v INVENTOR. 6W5/V6 SH/O ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 15, 1953 COMBINED CIGARETTE AND IGNITING MEANS Cheng Shio, New York, N. Y.
Application October 13, 1950, Serial No. 189,983
The present invention relates to a combined cigarette and igniting means and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a cigarette construction in which one end of the cigarette paper is first treated with an ignitable paraffin or pasted around the edge with a strip of potassium nitrate-treated cotton paper or the like and thereafter has placed thereon a series of spaced, easily combustible pieces of material such as may be found in the chlorate compounds, adjacent the edge of the paper so treated with paraffin or aforesaid cotton paper. A socket is provided for each of the so treated cigarettes and is in the form of a tube which is adapted to frictionally engage the treated end of the cigarette and which is itself treated upon its inner' face adjacent its inner end with a coating of phosphorous compounds or the like substance which will react with the pieces of material upon the cigarette to ignite the said pieces when the cigarette is withdrawn rapidly from said socket thereby to ignite the cigarette. The invention is equally applicable to cigars and the like,
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a novel self-igniting cigarette.
Another object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of a novel socket for a self-igniting cigarette, which socket forms a part of the present invention.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for packing cigarettes constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure l is a side elevational View, partly broken away, of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a socket forming a part of the present invention,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3 3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View of a cigarette constructed in accordance wtih the present invention,
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of using the present invention,
Figure 6 is a perspective View of a package especially constructed for the reception and storage of cigarettes constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional View, part- 2 ly in elevation, further illustrating the package shown in Figure 6.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a cigarette having a conventional filler I0 of tobacco and a conventional wrapper II of paper. The paper II at one end of the cigarette has a combustible portion I8 which is treated by applying thereto paraiin or aforesaid treated cotton paper of an ignitable nature. Thereafter there is affixed to the outer side of the combustible portion I8 of the paper il adjacent the edge of that end of the paper so treated with paraflin or combustible substance a series of spaced pieces I2 of frictionally ignita'ole material such as may be found in the chlorate compounds.
For each cigarette so constructed there is provided a socket I3 which is in the form of an open-ended cylinder which is treated upon its inner surface adjacent its inner end with a coating hi of a material adapted to coact with the pieces l2 to ignite the latter when placed in frictional contact therewith. This coating may take the form of chlorate compounds or the like.
Cigarettes and their respective sockets I3 so constructed may 'be individually packed or, as is illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawing, a plurality of sockets may be constructed of a single piece of material bent or corrugated, as indicated at I, to embrace one side of a plurality of cigarettes and then bent, as indicated at I6, and again corrugated, as indicated at II, to form complementary cigarette-receiving portions for such plurality or row of cigarettes, The inner and upper surfaces of this socket construction shown in Figure 6 will, of course, be treated with the identical coating I4 found in the individual sockets I3.
In use, it will be apparent that cigarettes so constructed and mounted in their respective sockets, when the sockets of the individual type shown in Figure 2 may be ignited by grasping the socket I3 in the fingers of one hand while grasping the cigarette in the ngers of the other hand and rapidly pulling the cigarette from the socket I3. When this is done the pieces I2 of ignitable material will come violently and frictionally into contact with the coating I4 to thereby ignite the same and, in turn, ignite the treated portion E8 of the cigarette paper II whereupon the tobacco filler I0 adjacent such treated port1on of the paper will become ignited in the conventional manner.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 6 and 7, the cigarette may be pulled rapidly from such socket with an identical action taking place with regard to the ignition of the cigarette, the only difference being that the user will grasp the package itself instead of an individual socket member in this case.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a package, a plurality of cigarettes each having a paper cover and a ller, said covers each being treated with a combustible substance at its inner end, a plurality of frictionally ignitable pieces of material affixed t0 the outer side of each of the covers in spaced relation and adjacent the inner end thereof, a 2
4 plurality of sockets ailixed to and mounted within said package and each adapted to receive the inner end of one of said cigarettes, and means in each of said sockets for igniting the pieces of material aixed to its associated cigarette when the same is Withdrawn from said socket, said sockets all being formed of a single strip of material having a fold between the ends thereof to form the sides of said sockets.
