WILLIAM F. BRYER, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,383, dated October 9, 1883.
Application filed January 26, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BRYER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Boston, in thecounty of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My inventionrelatesto a trunk which, when closed, has the external form and is adapted for the usage of an ordinary trunk, but when open forms a bureau, the whole device being rightly styled a bureau-trunk.
My invent-ion consists in the'eonstruetion, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the trunk open and forming abureau. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the trunk when closed, taken in the direction of line 1 1 in Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 2 2 in Fig. 3.
The body of the trunk is formed, mainly, of the back A, ends -13 B, and bottom 0. There is a'lid of the usual form, having the top D, ends E E, back F, and front G. (This lid is hinged to the back of the body of the trunk in the common manner by means of hinges a a. The whole trunk is bound by irons b at'the corners, as is common.
To the front G of the lid is hinged a board or cover, H, "by means of hinges c. 'VVhen the trunk is closed, this cover folds down, forming the frontof the body of the trunk. There are locks (2 (one or more) near the bottom of the trunk and cover, by which this cover is held in. place and the trunk locked. When the trunk is open, forming a bureau, the lid and the cover H stand vertically, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The body of the trunk is so divided by the vertical partitions e e and f f and horizontal partition 9' as to form a compartment for alarge drawer, I, in the lower part of the trunk, a
- narrow compartment or till, 11., at each end of the trunk, extending from the top to the bottom of the body thereof, a compartment, 2', at each end in the upper part of the body next to a till, h, and a central compartmenuj, in said upper part. In the lid may be the usual compartment, J closed by a board hinged at 7.: 7:.
To each partition e, at the upper edge, is
' Witnesses:
top a, and back 0. Each of these boxes Kmay be swung over to rest in an inverted posit-ion in a compartment, 5, or swung out, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to reston an end, B, of the trunk, and has a drawer, L, which may be 60 drawn out to the front when the box is so swung out. a
In the face of the cover H are clotheshooks p p, as many as are desired, which are pivoted so as to be swung into recesses in the cover on closing the trunk, or swung out for use after the cover is thrown up.
A mirror, M, has hooks g at the back; or there is an equivalent contrivance, by which the mirror may be hung at the upper part of 70 the raised cover H, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The handles r of the drawers may be so fitted as to fall into recesses, so as to be out of the way in closing the trunk.
When the whole is closed, the device has the external appearance of an ordinary trunk, and its construction is such that it will bear the common rough handling to which trunks are subjected, and when open it provides many conveniences of a bureau, as set forth. The movements for opening-or elosin g are few, simple, and may be quickly made.
This bureau-trunk is especially useful in the theatrical profession, and is also desirable for use by travelers generally.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the'body of the trunk, the lid, and a cover, H, hinged to the lid, and having clothes-hooks p, as described.
2. A trunk having a top lid, a front cover, H, hinged to the top lid, and a drawer, I, covered by said cover when down, substantially as set forth. r l
3. The combination of the body of the trunk, having a compartment in the lower part for a drawer, ,I, and compartments iin the upper part to receive the boxes or cases K, as specified, top lid, front cover, H, hinged to the top lid, and drawer I, covered by said cover when down, substantially as set forth. 1':
4. In a trunk, the combination of the body and lid, front cover, H, cases or boxes K, and drawers L, located, joined, and operating substantially as described.
