VALISE OR HANDWSTCHEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,108, dated J' anuary 30, 1900. Application filed May 5, 1899. Serial No. 715,760. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valises or Hand-Satchels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand-luggage of that class in which provision is made for separating the upper and lower compartments and for making the lower compartment telescopic, so as to increase the carrying capacity of the valise; and it has for its objects to provide an improved construction in which the body portion has a iixed partition at about its mid-height and the lower compartment adapted to telescope within the walls of the body portion below said partition, means being provided extending beneath the bottom of the lower compartment and attached thereto and adapted to engage means on the walls of the lower part of the body portion, whereby the said means serve not only to secure the lower compartment in its adjusted position, but to strengthen the same as well.
The novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction as hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of my irnproved valise, showing for the sake of clearness a portion of one side of the main section or body thereof broken away; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a main section or body portion l, which has the vform and appearance of an ordinary valise, and the upper converging sides of which are hinged in the usual or any well-known inanner, whereby the same may be opened outward. Within the body 1 and preferably at the junction of its upper tapering portion andV lower vertical side portions I provide a horizontal partition or bottom plate 2, which serves to forni the iioor of the upper compartment. The under side of the body l, which ordinarily contains the bottoni or door of the valise, is in the present case left open to admit of the insertion within that portion of the valise which is below the partition 2 of an oblong case or lower compartment 3, this case being, as indicated in the drawings, adapted to be held in place by straps 4t,which pass beneath said lower section or receptacle and which are detachably connected with the outer side of the body l. Through the medium of these connected straps and buckles which unite the same it is obvious that the lower section or compartment 3 is made adjustable with reference to its height within the casing l and that the same may, in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, be so supported as to bring its lower side a suitable distance below the body l, thereby increasing the carrying capacity of the valise. It is obvious, however, that the section 3 may be elevated and retained, in the manner in* dicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, with its lower side and bottom portion in line with the lower edges of the valise-body.
From the construction herein shown and described it will be seen that not only is a two-compartment valise or hand-Satchel provided, but that the same is so constructed as to provide, when desired, an increase in the carrying capacity of the valise and that the said compartments are so arranged that the articles contained in the upper compartment will in no way become mixed with those in the lower compartment, thus facilitating the carrying of different classes of articles in one valise.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A valise or hand-Satchel consisting of the body portion hinged at its upper portion to swing outward, with a fixed partition beneath and in proximity to the hinges, and walls depending below the said partition, and a lower compartment having means attached thereto for engaging means on the outer walls of the depending portion for adjustably securing the same within the open lower end of the said body portion, substantially as shown and described,
2. A valise or hand-Satchel consisting of the body portion having the upper portions ot' its sides adapted to open outward, with a fixed partition belowand in proximity to the IOO pintles of the hinges and walls depending body portion, substantially as and for the below said partition and open at the bottom, purpose specilied.
a lower compartment adapted to be inserted Y 1 within the open bottom of said body to tele- CHARLES L' GILBER'L scope therewith, and straps'seoured to the Witnesses:
