Description

E. D. KRlsTENsEN 2,813,348 n Nov. 19, 1957 DooR JAMB SETTER 2 Sheets-Sheet Filed July 29. 1957 Ejhar- D. Kr/Is/ensen A 1NvENToR United States Patent O DOOR JAMB SETTER Ejnar D. Kristensen, San Marcos, Calif.
Application .luly 29, 1957, Serial No. 674,928
7 Claims. (Cl. 33--194) This invention relates to building apparatus and more particularly to a device for setting door jambs.
lt is an object of the present invention to provide a door jamb setter that is operative to accurately set and align a door jamb completely independently of the use of liquid levels and squares.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a door jamb setter and window jamb setter that may be readily used by any experienced carpenter for properly aligning and setting door jambs and window frames in a simple, eilcient, and easy manner.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a setting device of the above type that can be selectively used with door and window frames of substantially any size and which simultaneously aligns all of the respective framing elements of the device being set in a single operation.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a door and window jamb setter bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and elliI cient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the followingdetailed description taken in conjunction with the accomt panying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a front elevational view of a setting device made in accordance with the present invention in operative use;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse cross sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevational View taken along line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse cross sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view showing certain parts of the present invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a door jamb setter made in accordance with the present invention is shown in operative association with a door jamb 11 of conventional construction.
The door jamb setter includes a pair of right triangular jigs which form the main components of the present invention, each such jig including a side leg 12, an upper leg 13, and an angularly extending brace bar 14. The free end of the side leg 12 is provided with an inwardly extending lip 16 of predetermined length, as is the upper leg 13 provided with an inwardly extending lip 17 of similar length. A pulley 18 is rotatably mounted at the apex of each right triangular jig so that the peripheral surface thereof is spaced inwardly from the surfaces of each of the associated legs 12, 13 a distance equal to the length of each associated lip 16, 17 for purposes hereinafter described.
Adjustable clamps 20 are used to secure the jigs in proper assembled relationship with the door jamb and include an angle bracket 21, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. ,A substantially flat plate 22 provided with a spacer mem rsce ber 23 at one end having a transversely extending bore 24, is provided with a longitudinal slot 27 through which a tightening screw 28 extends into engagement with one side of the angle bracket 21. This side of the angle bracket 21 also rotatably supports the pulley 26 for purposes hereinafter explained. It will be noted, in Figure 4, that the spacer head 23 is not symmetrically' arranged in re spect to the plate 22. This enables the spacer head 23 to space the door jamb 11 a predetermined distance away from the framing member 25 of the wall a distance corresponding to the thickness of the particular wall board or plaster being used so that a nal flush lit: will be assured. When using thick wall board, the head 23 is used in the position shown in Figure 4, but when thinner wall board is being used, the plate is reversed so that the smaller side of the head 23 will permit the door jamb to be moved slightly closer to the framing members 2S of the structure.
As is more clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing, one of the jigs is provided with a reel 30 that is adapted to be manually rotated by means of a handle 31. This reel is adapted to selectively wind and unwind both ends of a flexible cable 32 that is trained around all of the associated pulleys 18, 26, of the complete assembly. This reel enables the exible cable, which may be string, to be drawn taut so 'that any deviation of the cable relative to the door jamb can be readily noticed.. The use of the present apparatus is shown in Figure 1 wherein the elements of the door jamb 11 are in perfectly aligned relationship, in which position, the string 32 is equally spaced around the entire inside periphery of the door jamb a distance corresponding to the length of the respective lips 16, 17 of the jigs. It will thus be recognized that in the event the door jamb is not set properly that the flexible cable 32 will move relative to the lips 16, 17 so that the proper spacing of the flexible cable will no longer be maintained. Liquid levels 35 are built into each end of the jigs to facilitate the setting operation. With this apparatus, it is a Very simple procedure to set a door or window frame at any desired distance from the vertical uprights 37 of the building construction. In the same respect, because of the manually adjustable reel 30, it is possible to use this same apparatus for handling door and window frame substantially any size within the range of the exible cables 32 that happens to be wound upon the reel 30.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A door jamb setter comprising, in combination, a pair of jigs, clamp means, for releasably securing said jigs to the upper corners of a door jamb, pulley means, additional clamp means for securing said pulley means to said jamb in predetermined spaced relationship therewith, a pulley carried by each of said jigs, and flexible cable means extending through all of said pulley means for providing a reference frame for aligning said door jamb.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein each said jig comprises a right triangular member, said jig pulleys each being carried at the apex of said right angle symmetrical with both sides thereof.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein each side of each said jig is provided with an inwardly extending lip having an edge spaced from the outer surface of each said respective side.
4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein tangents of said jig pulley are spaced from said outer surfaces of said sides a distance substantially equal to the spacing of said edge of said lips therefrom.
5. The combination according to claim 4, further corna pn'sing a reel carried by one of said jigs for selectively winding and unwinding both ends of said flexible cable to adjust the tension thereof.
6. The combination according to claim 5, wherein said additional clamp means each comprises an angle member, a flat plate adjustably and slidably supported upon one side of said angle member, and a pulley rotatably carried upon said one side of said angle member.
7. The combination according to claim 6, wherein the outer end of said plate comprises a spacer head having a longitudinal bore extending therethrough.
