SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,435, dated April 10, 1883,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PARKER H. SWEET, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington,in the District ot'Oolumbia, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention has for its object to providea button-fastener or metallic connection for attaching buttons to articles of wearingappare], and which can be produced at a small cost, and at the same time form a most efficient and durable fastening; and it consists essentially of astapleshaped connection, provided with two sharp prongs or points and intermediate side logs or projections adapted to form a table or central support, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specitically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved fastener; Fig. 2, a similar. view as attached to the shank of a but-ton Fig. 3, a like view as attached to a button and fabric, and Fig. 4 a modification of my invention.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my improvements the fast- 3 5 ener or connection is preferably cut from suitable metallic strips or sheets, the completed article being of a staple-shaped form, having an upper loop portion, a, terminating in two sharp prongs or points, I), and provided with 40 intermediate side lugs or projections, c, as fully shown in the drawings. These lugs or projections may be either square, round, or oval in their shape, the rounded ones being deemed most desirable, as they enable the shank of the button to more readily slip over 5 the same into the loop portion a.
Themodification shown in Fig. 4 is formed of wire, and is of the same general construction as already described, being bent into shape by suitable machinery, so as to form the loop portion a, side projections, c, and points or prongs b, as shown.
In the operation of attaching buttons to wearing-apparel or other articles, the shank of the button is passed up over one of the 5 prongs b and side projections, 0, into the loop portion a, and the button and fastener thus connected adjusted within a suitable setting instrument, which is then operated in a manner well known to force the prongs b of the fastener down through the fabric and to deflect or clinch upon or into the under surface of the same, the lugs or projections 0 being adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the fabric or material to allow the shank of the button to have a free play upon the loop portion, as also to insure the fabric being firmly held between the said projections and the lower curved ends of the prongs or points, as fully shown in Fig. 3.
By means of my improvements I am enabled to provide a button-fastener of a simple and inexpensive construction, yet which is capable of firmly and durably securing buttons to fabrics or other materials.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture the herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the staple a, provided with side lugs or projectionsc, and points or prongs b, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
