Description

(NoModeL) P. H. SWEET, Jr.
BUTTON PASTENER. No. 257,531. Patented May 9,1882.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY N. PETERS. vholo-Lnho m mr, wmningwn. 0.1:.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PARKER H. SWEET, JR, OF WASHINGTON, D. (1., ASSIGNOB TO THE HEATON BUTTON FASTENER COMPANY, OF PROVIDENCE, R. I.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 257,531, dated May 9, 1882.
Application tiled March 15, 1882.
which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of button-fasteners in which is provided a fastening-plate having one or more prongs, one of said prongs being formed with an eye or loop to receive and hold the shank of the button which is designed to be attached to any desired article of wearing-apparel; and my improvements consist essentially of a button -fastener formed from a peculiar-shaped blank, which provides a retaining plate or base, and a suitable nnnr ber of fastening-pron gs, one of said fasteningprongs being bent reversely over the said retaining plate or base in such a mannc as to provide an eye or loop for the reception of the 0 shank of the button, and also to furnish a metallic base for the shank of the button to rest upon when in operation, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my complete device; Fig. 2, a side view of the same as attached to the shank of a button and fabric; Fig. 3, a plan view of the blank from which my improved fasteneris formed Fig. 4, a modification of said fastener, and Fig. 5 the blank from which said modified fastener is formed.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.
In carrying out my invention the blank A is cut or stamped outfrom sheet metal in such a manner as to provide three prongs, a, all pointing in the same direction and arranged side by side, the central prong of which is 50 made much longer than those upon the sides,
as fully shown in Fig. 3. The blank thus formed is converted into my improved fast- (No model.)
ener by bending the two shorter prongs down at right angles to the plate b, from which they project, and then bending the long or central prong in a reverse direction and over the rear of the plate I) in such a manner as to form an eye or loop, 0, for the reception of the shank of a button. The prong may then project straight down, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be bent again at right angles to the eye or loop and then bent downward, so as to provide a shoulder or projection, d, adapted to rest upon the surface of the fabric or material to which the device may be attached.
In the operation of my invention the shank of the button B is passed over the end of the curved prong and up into the eye or loop, as in the usual manner, and the two parts thus connected are placed in the jaws of a set ting-instrument and attached to any desired article of wearing-apparel in a manner well known.
A modification of my improvement is shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which the blank is of a T shape and the prongs bent down at the sides instead of at the ends. By means of my improvements the shank of the button, when attached to the material or fabric, rests upon the plate 7) instead of upon the said material, and thereby prevented from sinking into the same and forming a ridge or projection upon the under surface thereof to hurt or chat'e the flesh of the wearer. The device is also strong and durable, yet occupying but a small space upon the material or fabric, and combines, both in its construction and operation, a high degree of utility and et'ticiency with a ready adaptation to the purpose contemplated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described lmtton-fastener, consistin g of the plate b,provided with the twofront prongs, a, and with the central prong bent in a reverse 5 direction and over the said plate 1), whereby the plate protects the fabricfrom abrasion, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

Witnesses S. E. CARPENTER, EDMOND BRODHAG.
