EDYVARD D. STEELE, OF \VATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
BUTTON-FASTENER'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,960, dated February 5, 1884.
Application filed December 13,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. STEELE,
terbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention haslfor its object to provide a novel and simplified metallicfastener or other materials, whereby the button is securely held in place upon said fabric or material, and yet capable of being readily detached therefrom, when desired, without removing the metallic fastener,- and my improvements consist, essentially, of a metallic fastener formed with a central plate or table having two or more sharp-pointed fastening-prongs projecting downward at right angles thereto, said table beingprovided upon the side next the prongs with an elongated neck or loop having a half-circular head, which is adapted to receive and hold the shank of the button, all
specifically designated inthe claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of myimproved fastener; Fig; 2, asimilar view as attached to the shank of a button and to a fabric, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of a modification thereof.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.
In carrying out my invention the metallic fastener .or connection is preferably formed with a central table or plate, a, having two downwardly-projecting sharp prongs, b 1), arranged at the sides thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. although an additional prong, a, may be arranged to the rear of the table or plate, as shown in Fig. 3, if deemed more desirable or advantageous. Projecting from the front ofthe said table er plate a is arranged a curved upon its inner ends, as shown, the complete device being formed in one piece from a blank struck out of suitable sheet metal.
The construction of my invention being as above described, it will be observed that in the operation of attaching a button to'a fabric or material therewith the prongs of the metallic fastener are forced down through the said fabric or material, and the lower ends firmly clinched upon and into the lowersurface thereof by a suitable setting-instrument, leaving the table or plate a resting smoothly and securely upon the upper surface of the fabric. The shank of the button is then placed in one of the small recesses f of the half-circular head 0, and turned around until the shank slips over the saidhead and upon the neck or loop 01, as fully shown in Fig. 2. If it is desired to use a larger half-circular head, 6, the ends of the same may be bent up to allow the shank of the button to readily pass over the same into the loop or neck (I, when the ends may again be bent down to secure the button in place thereon.
It is obvious that the button may be attached to the neck or loop d either before or after the fastener is secured to the fabric.
In the practical operation of my invention the shank of the button rests snugly in the small recesses f of the head 6 and depresses the front end of said head down upon the fabric to form a most secure and efficient fastening.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1 As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fasten er, consisting of the plate or table at, having two or more sharp prongs, b, and a curved neck or loop, (2, provided with a half-circular head, 6, having recesses f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. EDWARD D,: STEELE. \Vitnesses:
F. D. BAKER, v THOMAS H. SEERY.
