IMPROVEM ENT IN PLOWS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,322., dated February 28, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs U. VAUGHAN, of De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct myinvention,Iwill procecd to describe it.
A represen ts the landside, B the mold-board, U,the share, and D E the handles, of a plow, all constructed as usual. Fis the beam, which is also of the usual shape, and, as well as the handles, may be of wood, (the usual material,) the landside, mold-board, and share of course being of metal.
The beam F, although of the usual form, is attached to the land-side handle D in a novel way, to wit: Around the back end of the beam a metal strap, G, is secured, said strap extending along both on the upper and under sides of the beam a trifle beyond the hole that receives the standard.
The back end of the strap has an eye, H, attached to it, and this eye has a screw-thread cut in it to receive a screw, a, which screw passes through oblong slots 1) made in flanges or metal plates 0 c that are attached to the land-side handle D. The screw is secured at any desired point in the slots 1) by nuts (I.
I is a standard, the lower end of which is firmly secured to the landside. The upper end has ajournalformedonir, which passes through the beam F, the hole in the beam being of taper form to permit of a vertical play or adjustment of the beam. (See dotted linese, Fig.1.) The journal ofthe standard also passes through the strap G, near its ends, the holein the strap at the under side of the beam corresponding in length with that of the lower part of the hole in the beam, and the strap below the beam resting on a rod which bears on a shoulder, a",

The beam F is allowed to turn freely on the journal of the standard I, and as the hole in the beam is made taper the beam may also be tilted or adjusted vertically, the front end of the beam being thereby raised or lowered, as may be desired.
I11 order to elevate the front end of the beam F, the screw a is lowered in the slots 1) and secured at the desired point by the nuts 0?. In order to depress or lower the front end of the beam, the nut of conrseis raised in the slot 1).
To adjust the beam laterally-that is to say, to move the front end of the beam either to the right or left-the screw a is turned, and said screw moves the beam through the medium of the eye H.
From the above description it will be seen that the beam may with the greatest facility be adjusted both vertically and laterally, so as to regulate both the width and depth of the furrow, the elevating of the front end of the beam causing the share to strike deeper into the ground and the lowering of it having a tendency to elevate the share. The turning or adjusting of the front end of the beam toward the land diminishes the width of the furrow and the turning of the beam from the landincreases the width.
To the standard I, just below the beam F, a metal rod, J, is attached. This rod extends along underneath the beam F, and hasaswivel, K, on its end, to which the draft-hook fis attached. The strap Got the beam bears or rests on the rod J.
