Description
M. EARNHART.
Shovel-Plow.
Patented Nov. 15, 1859. 7
%w gmuza UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
MILES EARNHART, OF COLDVVATER, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent- No. 26,096, dated November 15,1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MiLns EARNHART, of (Joldwater,in the county of Marshall and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Gotton-Scraper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side elevation of my improved cotton-scraper; Fig. 2, a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a rear elevation thereof.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A beam, A, of ordinary constiuction is pro vided, to which are attached handles B B in the usual manner.
The principal parts of the scraper consist of a stock or landside, 0, bottom D, and mold board E, arranged and combined as follows:
The stock 0 of the scraper may be made from a single bar of metal bent into the shape represented in Fig. 1, and secured to the under side of the beam by bolts and nuts a a.
The bottom D is secured to the bottom of the stock and is made concave on its under side, the concavity 9 extending longitudinally the whole length thereof.
The mold-board E is of ordinary shape, and is secured to the front of the stock with a double adjustment. A bolt, 1), passes through near its left-hand end, and through a slot, d, Fig. 1, in the stock, and is secured by a nut. The slot is of sufticientlength to allow any necessary amount of adjustment of the left-hand end of the mold-board. A set of holes, f f f, is also made in the mold-board near its righthand end, as represented, to receive the nose or tenon h of a brace, G, which extends back and bears against the rear standard of the stock O,to which it is rigidly secured by a bolt and nut, 0. Thus by loosening the nut on the bolt 1), which passes through the slot d, and changing the nose 7b of the brace G to any one of the holes fff, the right-hand end of the mold-board E can be adjusted to any position desired. Therefore, by both of these adjustments, either end of the mold-board can be raised or lowered separately, or both together, to any required extent.
A set of holes, i i i, may be made in the rear standard of the stock, through which the bolt 0 passes, so that the brace G can be raised or lowered, if desired, to vary the adjustment produced by the holes fff.
The concave bottom D prevents the scraper from being thrown out of the ground by stones or other obstructions, and keeps the moldboard from sinking too deeplyinto the ground. The more thelower edge of the mold-board proj ects below the bottom the deeper it cultivates, and by adjusting the ends thereof separately, above described, the whole scraper is made to run easily and trimly.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement and combination of the double adjustments of the mold-board E with the stock 0 and rigid supporting-brace G, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In witness thatthe above is a true specification of my improved cotton-scraper I hereunto set my hand this the 1st day of June, 1859.
MILES EARNHART.
