Robert U. Bronson INVENTOR.
BY M
Patented Sept. 28, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in structural refinements in folding tables, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a table of the character herein described, the same having a leg structure which can be readily folded under the table top, so that the entire table may be conveniently and easily transported or stored when it is not in use.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specificaticn proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention;
Figure 2 is an end view thereof;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the same;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the table in its folded position;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary underside view, taken substantially in the plane of the line G6 in Figure 3; and,
Figure l is a fragmentary underside View, taken substantially in the plane of the line 1-? in Figure Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a folding table which is designated generally by the reference character it and embodies in its construction a table top it having secured to the underside thereof a pair of spaced parallel side rails l4 and a cross-rail It which connects together the side rails at one end thereof.
In the event the table is to be used in conjunction with some game apparatus, such as for example may be contained in an enclosure or box indicated by the dotted line [8 in Figure 2, the table top l2 may be formed with an open ended recess 29 and a bottom plate 22 may be secured to th underside of the table top between the rails is, it so that the game apparatus box l8 may be conveniently seated in the recess on the plate 22, as shown.
An inverted U-shaped leg member 24 is connected at its upper edge by hinges 26 to the underside of the table top [2 so that it may be swung from an extended, operative position wherein it abuts the cross-rail it as shown in Figures 3 and '7 to a collapsed, inoperative position wherein it lies under the plate 22 of the table top 20, as shown in Figure 5. A similar leg member 28 is connected by hinges 353 to the underside of the other end portion of the table top and is swingable from an extended operative position as shown in Figures 3 and 6 to a folded position under the leg member 25 as shown in Figure 5. Suitable spacers 32 are provided between the hinges 38 and the underside of the plates 22 to provide clearance between the plate 22 and the leg member 28 for the leg member 24 in the folded position.
When the leg member 23 is extended, it abuts a pair of inwardly projecting stops 34 provided at the ends of the s de rails l (see Figures 2 and 6), and means are provided for sustaining the leg members 2 28 in their extended positions when the device is in use. These means consist of pairs of flanges 36 which are disposed at the outer side edges of the two leg members at right angles thereto, so that these flanges actually coact with the leg members n supporting the table.
The flanges as are separably secured to the side rails liby a plurality of screws 38 and in addition the flanges are connected to the leg members themselves by removable angle brackets 40.
When the table is to be folded, the angle brackets 4-0 and screws 38 are removed, the flanges 36 are separated from the leg members and the two leg members are then folded under the table top, as already explained.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing ther has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangements of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a folding table, the combination of a table top, a pair of spaced parallel Side rails secured to the underside of said top, a cross rail connecting together said side rails at one end thereof, an inverted U-shaped leg member hinged at its upper edge to said top and disposed between said side rails adjacent the end rail, said leg member References Cited in the file of this patent being swingable from an extended position Wherein it abuts said end rail to a folded position under UNITED STATES PATENTS said top, a pair of flanges provided at the side Number Name Date edges of said leg member at right angles thereto, 5 910,993 Dfentz 1909 a pair of angle brackets removably securing said 933,414 Dlckson 26, 1909 flanges to said leg member, and bolts extending 1,770,500 Wedge July 1930 through said flanges and said side rails remov- 1,782,623 Cashn 25, 1930 ably securing the same together. 1,966,344 Hallowell et a1.
