DRAW DRAPERY LAP SUPPORT Filed July :3, 1952 l INVENTOR. VIQLA FI SWAFFO 12 n ATTO EN EYS Patented Aug. 3, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DRAW DRAPERY LAP SUPPORT Viola F. Swaiord, Big Spring, Tex.
Application July 3, 1952, Serial No. 297,035
This invention relates to draw drapery supports, and more particularly to means for supporting the top inner marginal portions of draw draperies.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved draw drapery lap supporting device for use with draw drapery supports of the type having horizontally extending tongue elements to which the upper inner portions of the drapery members are adapted to be attached, the improved lap support being simple in construction, being easy to install, and preventing dog-caring, or breaking down of the inner top marginal portions of the drapery elements when the draperies are drawn together.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved draw drapery lap supporting device for use on the horizontally extending tongue elements of conventional draw drapery bracket structure such as shown in the U. S. patent to C. W. Kirsch 1,876,060, the improved lap supporting device being inexpensive to construct, being easy to mount on the tongue element of a drapery supporting structure, and providing a means of rigidifying the upper inner corner portions of the draw draperies to prevent collapse thereof when the draperies are drawn together.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of portions of a conventional draw drapery supporting assembly of the type shown in the Kirsch Patent, 1,581,806 and the Kirsch Patent 1,876,060, showing a pair of improved drapery lap supports according to the present invention mounted on the horizontally extending tongue elements of the draw drapery supporting assembly.
Figure 2 is a top View of the structure shown in Figure 1. f
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a front elevational detail view of the draw drapery lap supports of Figure l shown with their sleeve elements in unfolded positions preparatory to mounting on the tongue members of a draw drapery supporting assembly.
Referring to the drawings, the draw drapery lap supports are designated respectively at II, II' and are generally similar in shape, as shown in Figure 4. The lap supports II, II' comprise generally T-shaped bodies of flat, substantially rigid material, such as aluminum sheet, plastic 3 Claims. (Cl. 1GO-341) sheet material or the like, and are provided with the respective head portions I2, I2 and the respective stem portions I3, I3', as shown in Figure 4c. The ends of the head portion I2 are provided with the respective arms or extensions I4 and I5 extending parallel to and being coplanar with the stem i3, and the ends of the head element i2 are provided with the integral extensions Ifl and I5 extending parallel to and being coplanar with the stem I8. The stem I3 is widened to define the respective bendable marginal flanges i6 and I'I which are bendable around the dotted lines as shown in Figure 2 so that the flanges I6 and I'I define a sleeve element, shown at I S in Figure l which is slidably engageable on the horizontally extending tongue I9 formed on the depending web member 20 of the left drapery attaching element ZI of a conventional draw drapery supporting assembly above described. The sleeve element I8 is formed with the open ended longitudinal slot 22 adapted to receive the dependingI web element 20 when the sleeve element I8 is telescoped over the tongue I9 in the manner shown in Figure 1. As shown in Figure 3, the sleeve element I8 is substantially at to closely fit on the flat tongue I9 and to support the stem I3, head I2, and arms I4 and I5 in a vertical plane substantially adjacent to the upper inner portion of the drapery supported on the assembly.
Similarly, the member II is formed with the bendable ilange elements I6' and I'I on its stem portion I3', said flange elements being bendable to define the relatively flat sleeve element I8' engageable on the horizontally extending tongue I9-at the right side of the drapery supporting assembly, the sleeve element I8' being formed with the open ended longitudinal notch 22 adapted to receive the depending web 20 of the drapery-connecting member 2 I With the sleeve element I8 engaged on the tongue I9 in the manner shown in Figure 1, the head l2', extensions Irl', and I 5', and the stem I3 are supported in a vertical plane substantially adjacent to the drapery, shown at 23.
The extensions I4, I and I5, I5 are provided at their ends with opposing notches 24 and 24 and are further provided with notches 25 and 25 adjacent the corners between the respective head portions I2, I2 and the extensions. Similarly, said end portions of the head elements i2 and I2 are provided with notches 26 and 25', as shown in Figure 4, diagonally opposed with respect to the notches 25, 25'. The respective stem portions I3 and I3 are formed with the opposed notches 21 and 2T', as shown in Figure 4. The lap supports may thus be secured to the respective draperies by means of loops of threads 29, engaged through the material and anchored in the respective notches in the manner shown in Figure 1, thus rigidifying the inner upper corner portions of the material and preventing said upper corner portions of the material from collapsing or becoming dog-eared when the draperies are drawn together into overlapping relationship at their inner marginal portions.
While a specic embodiment of an improved draw drapery lap supporting device has been disclosed in the foregoing description;A it will be understood that various modifications .vithin the spirit of the invention may occur tothose skilled A Therefore, it is intended that noin the art. limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
