. l COMBINED CIGARETTE 0R CIGAR BOX AND MATCH-CONTAIN IN G MEANS THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Feb. 3, 1920.
Application filed April 22, 1919. Serial No. 291,859;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TERRY J. MAoNUsoN,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of the boron h of Manhattan, in the city, county, and bta-te of New York, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cigarette or Cigar Boxes and Match-Containing Means Therefor, of
which the following is a specification.
The resent invention relates to a. combined cigarette or ci box and match containing means. there or, and has for an object to provide a device of this character with which a number of matches may be provided with the box in an inconspicuous manner and which will be so arranged that as they are removed they are ignited. A further object is to construct such means so that it will in effect constitute the bottom of the box and will not add materially to the size thereof to the end that the cigarette box will not be changed in its size or outward appearance to such an extent as to make the same inconvenient to carry, freaky in design or otherwise out of keeping with any established practices attached to the old forms of boxes, in other words, the present device will be entirely consistent with the manner of packing, shipping, selling and using of the ordinary cigarette boxes. A still further object is to provide ignition means for the matches which will present an unused surface to every match so that its ignition will be positive and assured.
With these and other objects in view, embodiments of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, and these embodiments will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto and the inparts forming the bottom;
F 6 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the parts forming the bottom before assembling;
Fi show ng the bottom assembled;
Fig. 8 isa transverse sectional view taken along the line 8-8 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 9 is a longitudinal sectional view with parts broken away of one end of a box showing a slightly modified form.
7 is a longitudinal sectional view Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, my inventionaccording to the present dlsclosed embodimerit thereof, comprises a box portion 10 having a cover 11, this bein preferably of the usual type used for contamlng cigarettes or small cigars although it will be understood that the invention will be applicable to other types of boxes, as for instance sliding or telescopic boxes.
The bottom of the box comprises an interior layer of cardboard 12 beneath which there are secured two opposed layers 13 and j 14 similar in form and shown in plan in Fig. 5. Adjacent the ends of these layers there are provided transverse strips 15 and 16 of an ignition substance, such as is com-- monly used with safety matches, this substance being preferably placed directly upon the cardboard forming the layers by spraying, painting or. other suitable processes. Spaced therefrom and toward the center of the layers, there are provided rectangularopenings 17 and 18. Two such layers are placed together with the strips 15' and 16 inside and registering with each other and are secured by staples 19 and 20, 21 and 22, a. plurality of matches in a single layer being first placed between the layers with their heads 24 disposed in the pockets formed by the openings 17 and 18 and their stems 25 extending between the strips 15 and 16 and slightly beyond the ends of the layers, and preferably having enlargements 26 formed thereon to enable the same to be more easily gripped by the fingers.
The match containing portion as shown in Fig. 7 is secured to the layer 12 by pasting or other suitable means. and the whole exterior of the box is provided with a covering layer 27 which serves to close the pockets space between the layers within which the formed by the openings 17 and 18 at their is gripped at its end and drawn out from between the layers becoming ignited as the head is drawn between the strips 15 and 16, a new or unused surface of said strips being provided for each matchso that its ignitlon is assured. The manner of fastening the lay-\ ers with staples, permits of sufficient friction and yieldability as the head passes between the strips 15 and 16to cause them to ignite. It will be understood that the layers 12 and 13 may be secured by other means if desired, as for instance by gluing at the center and .along the side portions. The
matches are disposed, may be of such width relatively to the thickness of the matches, that the matches will be retained therein but at the same time may be readily withdrawn when pulled frombetween the layers by the fingers. set need be used, that is, as distinguished from the form illustrated in which two sets are used, the smaller box will have a bottom in which there is only one set of matches, one pocket in which the heads are disposed, and one pair of ignition strips.
In Fig. 9, I have illustrated a slightly modified form in which the ends of the layer 14 are set back as at 30 so that the ends of the match stems are flush with the end of the box and do not project. The fact that they are exposed however, permits them to be readily gripped by the fingers.
With my lmprovements, a box is provided for matches, which may be automatically li hted as they are removedthereby greatly adding .to the comfort and convenience of the user, and this is done without in any way sacrlficing compactness or detracting from the appearance of the box.' The improvements are simple and practical of construc- In smaller boxes, only one match tion and will not add materially to the cost of the box.
I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory embodiments of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
I claim: 1. A match holder comprising in combination a single layer of matches disposed .tween said layers, said matches adapted to be withdrawn from said retaining means, the heads moving from said pockets between said layers, and friction means disposed between said layers and adapted to be engaged by the heads of said matches as they are withdrawn to ignite said matches.
2. A match holder comprising in combination a single layer of matches disposed side by side, retaining means comprising a yielda le layer disposed at one side of said matches, and a layer disposed at the other side of said matches, said layers being substantially parallel and yieldably engaging the surface of thestems of said matches, said layers being-provided with registering openmgs forming a pocket for the heads of said matches, said matches adapted to be withdrawn from said retaining means, the heads moving fromsaid pockets between said layers, and friction means disposed between said layers and adapted to be engaged by the heads of said matches as they are withdrawn to ignite said matches.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as mydinvention, I have signed my name'hereun er.
TERRY J. MAGNUSON.
