1 This'in'venti'on relates to improvements in a type of furniture in which a bed is arranged within a chesterfieljdj structure and the. principal object'ofthe, invention is to provide an article of furniture which" will have the appearance of'a chesterfi'eld: and can be'used as such but which may be instantly converted into a comfortable bed.

The principal feature of the invention consists in the novel' construction of a chesterfield' frame having a shallow cabinet fcrmingthe back with rigid"arms' extending from the" open front be tween which a bed" frame is pivotally supported on arms pivotally" mounted in' the base of the cabinet; a sloping back being secured to the'underside ofv the bed frameand a seatand' front panel for the chesterfield being foldably connected to said back to fold underthe' bed when I l'llstrated in Figure 1.

In present day living conditions; where apartmerit space. is extremely limited ;it is desirable that utility f urniture be provided which will occupy the minimum of spacelbutwill afiord the maximum; of comfort for seating: and sleeping accommodation while presenting an acceptable appearance.

In the device herein illustrated as shown? in: the drawingsil haveconstructed ashallow cabinet I with suitably ornate top 2 and end panels 3 and having an open front.

Extending from the open front of the cabinet at each end is a panel 4 preferably shaped to form the end arms of a chesterfield. These arm panels may be provided with broad arms or may be upholstered in a desirable manner.

Secured to the inner faces of each of the arm panels 4 within the cabinet are plates 5, preferably of metal which have formed therein an: upright guideway 6 which is' formed with an" upwardl'y and forwardly curving terminal portion I.

A lug 8, preferably' formed on-the inward side of' each plate 5 adjacent tothe bottom andarrangedfor-ward of theguideway 6; forms, a pivot support f or a hat bar 9 which extends upwardlyand is adapted to swing forwardly anddownwardly from the upright position illustrated in Figure-2-- 1 1 End panels I'll" rigidly connected by longitudia nal bars I I and I2 to-form'abed frameare each provided with a bracket l3 arranged substantially centrallyof their length and'these brackets areprovidedwith pivot studs I4 which pivotally connect same to thebars-Sat a pointad'jacent to but spaced from" the free outer end.

When the bed frame isin the vertical position housed within thecabinet l as'shown'in Figure 2 the roller pins' l 6 4 rest inthe'bottom ofthe guideways 6 and the bars-9 wnrbeparallel therewith.

When the top edge-of the bed frameis pulled outwardly thebars 9 swing outwardlyupontheir pivot supports and the frame pivoting onthe bracket pivots I 4 swingstoa horizontal position, the lower and inward side-being=guided by the rollers 16 engaging the guid'eways 6.

The guideways limit the upward movement of therollers and the pivot bars 9 form forwardly angled struts supporting the frame while therollers-move into'the horizontalterminal endsof the guideways, thus supporting the framerig-ldlyin the extended position;

A vertical block l-lforming part of each ofthe end panels 4 and extending inwardly therefrom formsa further rigid support for the 'o'utwar edge'of the bed frame when extended;

Ahead panel Wis suitably hinged tothe' upperedge of each of the end panels 10 of the bed frame and these are adapted to fold inwardly over the mattress and bed clothes placed upon the bed spring so as to hold same in place when the bed is moved to the vertical position.

An eye I9 is secured to the inward side of each panel I8 near the hinged edge and a link 20 connected to each of said eyes is pivotally connected to the outer end of each of the bars 9 so 3 that as the bed is swung outwardly the links lift the panels 18 to a vertical position and form head and foot boards for the bed frame.

Thin plates 2| of wood or metal are secured to and extend outwardly from the outward sides of the end members of the bed frame or they may form a part thereof. These plates support a longitudinal panel 22 arranged in a, sloping position which when the bed is in the vertical position forms the back of the chesterileld. This panel may be suitably upholstered on its outer face as indicated by dotted lines.

At the bottom or inward edge of the chesterfield back panel 22 there is arranged an angularly disposed strip 23 to support the bottom edge of the back upholstering.

Secured by suitable hinges: to the forward edge of the strip 23 is a seat board 24, the top of which may be upholstered, or upholstered cushions may be placed thereon.

, A front panel 25 is hinged in a suitable manner to the underside of the seat board 24 at its for ward edge; and a: pair of links 28, arranged one at each 'end are pivoted to the front panel slightly below the hinge. The links 2% are pivotally secured at theirinner ends to blocks 2'! secured beneath the strip'23 andoperate to swing the front panel 25 to and from a vertical position as the seat board swings on its" hinges;

In swinging the. bed outwardly as it tilts on its centre pivots is on the bars'9 the links 26 pull inwardly and swing the front panel 25 inward and the seat board'is swung on its hinges to close in toward the back 22. The back being rigid with the bed frame is carried under same asit is swung outward when the bed is to be used and when the bed is swung upwardly-to be housed within the cabinet i the seat 24 swings downwardly and the front panel swings outwardlyall with a single co-ordinated movement. v

When the bed is closed, there will be an openingbetween the top 2 of the cabinet and the panel 22 of thechesteriield back, on account of the width of the bed andthis is closed by a removable panel 28, which, when the bed is open, may-be supported under the; top, being held in place by suitable guide pins or strips 29. 1

A piece offurniture such as described may be finished to suit other furnishings and provides a useful seat and aserviceablebed which maybe converted to either with a very simple unitary operation. 7

Whatlclaimas myinventionis: j

1. A foldaway Chesterfield bed construction, comprising, in combination, with a casing and a rectangular bed framepivotally swingable about a longitudinal axis intermediate the width of said frame into and out of said casing. a Chesterfield back panel rigidly secured to the underside of said bed frame so as to extend from adjacent one longitudinal edge across beneath said frame in spaced apart relationship therewith, an extension projecting from the lower marginal edge of said back panel, a seat portion having one edge hinged to said back panel above said extension, a front panel hinged to the other edge of said seat pertion, and connecting links pivotally attached to said back panel extension and to said hingedly mounted front panel adjacent the upper margin thereof to form a pivotal linkage therebetween, whereby the outward movement of said bed frame about said longitudinal axis is adapted to cause an inward movement of said back panel extension with respect to said casing and said inward movement is transmitted through said pivotal connecting links to cause a corresponding inward movement of said front panel with respect to said seat portion, causing said back panel, hinged seat and front panel to fold into juxtaposed collapsed position beneath said bed frame.

2. A foldaway chesterfleld bed construction according to claim 1 in which the bed frame includes a pair of boards one at each end extending be- "neath said frame, a supporting plate attached to each end board, said back panel being attached to said end plates.

A foldaway chesterfield bed construction according to claim 1 wherein said back panel extension'jcomprises a block attached to and extending downwardly from the back panel at eacliend of the back panel, each of said links being pivoted at one end to one of said blocks and at the other end to said front panel adjacent the hinged connection with said seat portion.

A foldaway chesterfield bed construction according to claim 1 in which the frame includesa pair of boards one at each end extending beneath said frame, a supporting plate attached to each end board, said back panel being attached to said end plates and said back panel extension comprises a block attached to and extending downwardly from the back at each end of the panel, each of said connecting links being piv-' oted at one'end to one of said blocks and at the other end to said front panel adjacent the hinged connection with said seat portion.

5. A foldaway chesterfield bed construction according to claim 1, in which the back panel when in one position Within said casing stops short of the top of the casing, and a removable panel between the top of the back panel and the top of the casing to close the front of said casing, the panel being removable to allow outward pivotal movement of the top longitudinal side of th bed frame.
