This invention relates to the art of furniture, and more particular reference of a piece of furniture so constructed as to be utilized either as a chair or bed.

The primary object of the invention is therefore'the provision of a novel structure having particular reference to what is known in the art as convertible furniture, and with this end in view aims to provide a combination chair and bed characterized by novel assembly and arrangement of parts wherein the structure consists of a plurality of frame members which are so related to one another so that when arranged in one position the same will resemble and may be utilized as a comfortable easy chair of the overstuffed variety and which when disposed in certain other positions relative to one another may be utilized as a couch or bed Where one may assume a prone position.

Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will become apparent during astudy of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,'wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of an article of furniture constructed in the manner comprehended by this invention and showing the same when utilized as an easy chair.

Figure 2 is a detail perspective looking at the chair from the back thereof, and illustrating themanner in whichthe supporting legs for the back of the chair is incorporated therewith.

Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the back in a horizontal positionin preparing the structure for use as a bed or couch.

Figure 4 is a perspective showing the back and seat members extended in a horizontal position and with the cushion so arranged when the furniture is utilized as a bed;

With reference more in detail to the drawings, it will beseen that the present invention comprehends the provisionof a main, center or seat frame'A, a complemental seat carrying frame B and complemental back rest frame C. The main or seat frame A comprises side members 5 and end members'fi. At the corners of the frame are locatedthe' suitable forward legs 7 and the rear legs 8; The side side members of the frame A as at 9, said hinges being adapted to swing inwardly so that the seat carrying frame may rest upon the main frame A in a manner shown to advantage 'in Figure 5. The seat" carrying, frame B has at opposite ends of its side members vertical posts 10, said vertical posts being connected adjacent their vertical ends by a cross bar 11. Thus is formed the frame workof the side arms 12. To give the arms 12 an overstuffed appearance I provide suitab'le filling material13' enclosed by fabric 14, which fabric may be of anysuitable design and is stretched along the sides and ends of the arm frame and the side frame members of'the seat carrying frame B as clearly illustrated. A suitable fabric 15' preferably corresponding in color and design with the fabric '14 is stretched about and completely hides the frame of the seat carrying member 13, and providing top and bottom walls 4 of the frame for the reception therebetween of suitable springs 16, thus providing a suitable cushion seat for the device. The main or central frame A is likewise provided with a suitable fabric covering 17 similar to the before mentioned fabric and adapted to receive springs 18, thus forming a complemental cushion for the auxiliary seat cushion so that when the said seat carrying frame is in the position shown in Figure 4 there is provided a complete cushion somewhat as illustrated. The back rest frame C has also its frame members suitably covered with a fabric corresponding with the rest of the structure in such a manner as to provide a pocket or cushion receiving space 19. The fabric in this instance is designated by the reference character 20. It is to be noted that the adjacent end of the frames A and C converge inwardly toward one another at their hinge connection 9, the side members of the said frame being hingedly associated so as to permit the back frame C to be disposed in a horizontal position as shown in Figure 4.

It is also to be noted that the side members of the back rest frame C are suitably formed adjacent the pivotal connection so as to provide a snug fit with the adjacent end of the arms when the back rest is in the position shown in Figurel, as when the device is being utilized as an easy chair.

A suitable fabric covered spring cushion 21 is adapted to be received in the pocket formed in the back frame C in a manner before described, said cushion 21 being pivotally mounted therein as at 22.

As shown to advantagein Figure 6 I provide somewhat of a hinged connection between the cushion portion of the main frame A and the cushion 21. This hinge connection is in the form of a pair of fabric strips secured together adjacent their ends and adapted to receive suitable stufiing material 23 therebetween. It is to be noted that the outer strip 24 is the longer of the two and is stitched or otherwise secured at its opposite end to the main seat cushion as at 25, and to an intermediate portion of the cushion 21 as at 26. The complemental strip is designated as at 27. Thus it will be seen that prior to disposing the back rest frame C in a horizontal position the Cushion 21 is disposed in a reverse position within its pocket being moved on its pivotal connection in a direction illustrated by the arrow in Figure 5 thus enabling the cushion when the frame C is disposed horizontally to rest at one end thereof upon the top edge of the end member of the frame C as clearly shown in Figure 6. The fabric strips 23 and 27 then is utilized for bridging the space between the adj acent end of the seat frame cushion and the cushion 21, thus in a manner providing a continuation of a soft and comfortable cushion for the device when utilized as a bed or couch. In order to support the back rest frame C in a horizontal position there is pro vided a pair of legs 28 hingedly mounted as at 29 in the upper end of a suitable elongated pocket 30 formed in each of the side members of the said frame C, see Figure 7, fixed as at 31 to an intermediate portion of each of the said legs 28 is a suitable bracket plate 32. A substantially arcuate bar 33 has one end thereof fixed to the bracket 32 as at 34, said bar 33 adapted to swing in and out of the pocket and longitudinally of the side member of the frame, as clearly shown in Figure 7. The bar 33 is provided with an elongated slot 34 for the reception of a suitable guide pin 35, said pin and slot cooperating at the free end of the plate 33 to provide a locking means for holding the leg in an extended and supporting position. Suitable spring means 36 is anchored to the respective plate and adapted to bear against the adjacent end of the plate 33 for holding the plate in a locking position when the legs are extended to a supporting position.

As shown in Figure 9, in order to hold the back member in a somewhat upright or vertical position when the device is adapted to be utilized as a chair, there is provided a suitable latch mechanism comprising a pivoted latch member 38 disposed interiorly for pivotal movement as at 39 within one of the side members of the back frame 0. The rearwardly disposed vertical frame member 10 of each of the arms is provided with a suitable pocket or notch 40 adapted to receive the hooked extremities of the latch member 38, and there being formed at the open end of the notch 40 a suitable keeper plate 41 with which the hooked end of the latch 38 is adapted to engage for holding the back in an upright position. Suitable spring means 42 anchored to the side members of the frame and to the pivoted latch 38 will suitably function so as to hold said member in engagement with the keeper plate 41, as shown to advantage in Figure 9. The side members of the frame will of course be suitably depressed and provided with an opening 43 in the depression to which a handle portion 44 of the latch member 38 will project to facilitate its operation as is obvious.

In Figure 10 is illustrated a modified form of adjusting means whereby the back rest may be held in adjusted position with respect to the seat of the chair. Such means comprises an operating bar 45 pivoted intermediate its ends as at 46 to one side of the back rest frame C at the lower end of the frame. The said bar 45 terminates at one end in a curved portion 47, said portion being provided with a plurality of spaced notches 48 for selective engagement with a stop pin or stud 49. At its opposite end the bar 45 merges into an eye 50 for the re ception of a shank 51 of a handle member 52, said shank being held therein by suitable means 53. The extremity of the shank 51 is slidable through a suitable opening formed in a plate 54 secured to the side of the frame. A coil spring 55 is disposed about the shank 51, one end of said spring impinging against the eye portion of the bar 45, the opposite end of the spring impinging against the plate 54, thus normally urging the adjacent extremity of the bar outwardly or away from said plate. Thus it will be seen that the spring 55 acting against the upper end of said bar 45 as explained thenotches 48 will be held in engagement with the pin 49 in an obvious manner.

From the foregoing then it will be seen that I have provided a novel and simple combination chair and bed structure, wherein is provided a neat and attractive appearing article of furniture which may be used as an easy chair, or when occasion may demand or it is desired, it may be quickly and easily converted into a bed or couch, without disconnecting any of the individual parts of the device, and without in any way destroying or effecting a material change in the cushioning means for the chair.

Even though I have herein shown and described certain detail structural elements of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is fully susceptible of changes comprehended by the spirit of the invention as ierein described, and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what I wish to claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an article of furniture of the class described, a chair comprising a main seat frame and having supporting legs therefor, and having a cushion carried by said frame, a complemental seat frame hingedly associated with one end of said main frame, said complemental frame being provided with arms adapted for supporting said complemental frame when the frame is disposed in a horizontal position, said last mentioned frame being also provided with a cushion adapted to cooperate with the first mentioned cushion to provide a flat supporting surface when said complemental seat fraine is disposed in said horizontal position, a back seat frame hingedly mounted to the opposite end of said main seat frame, and adapted to be disposed in a horizontal position, and

a cushion member carried by said back frame,

a hinged fabric connection between said last mentioned cushion and said main seat cushion whereby to form in conjunction therewith a continuing cushion when the chair is utilized as a couch.

2. In an article of furniture of the class described, a chair comprising armain frame and having supporting legs therefor, a cushion member disposed within said frame, a complemental seat frame hingedly associated with one end of said main frame and adapted to be folded in a horizontal position, a cushion in said last mentioned frame,

and said last mentioned frame having arm portions adapted to provide a support for the frame when in a horizontal position, a back frame hinged to the opposite end of said main frame and adapted to be disposed in a horizontal position, foldable supporting members associated with said back frame, said back frame being formed to constitute a pocket and having a cushion member mounted for pivotal movement therein, said cushion having one end thereof adapted for disposition upon one end of said back frame when said frame is disposed in a horizontal position to provide a head rest, and suitable cushion means associated with said last mentioned cushion and with said main seat cushion to provide a continuing cushion for the chair when said members are disposed in said horizontal posltion.
