These sideA panels 20 are pref-l" erablyfiish With the'inn'e sides ofthe-front narid It is lo' b' noted, howevrfthat'the' 3 by a front flat rail 23, and a rear rail 24. The front rail 23, extends above the rear rail 24, and forms a support for the sections I3 and I4, as will later appear. If desired, the lower ends of the front uprights Il of the frame members can be provided with ornamental feet 25.
Each of the sections I2, I3 and I4 include a rigid frame 25. These frames can be constructed in any desired way to form a rigid structure and as illustrated each includes spaced parallel longitudinally extending rails 2l and end connecting rails 28. intermediate transverse brace rails 29 can also be provided and the entire frame is also braced at the corners. The front section I3 and the intermediate section I4 have rigidly secured thereto mattresses 3l! and these mattresses are preferably of the inner spring type and their outer faces are covered with suitable mattress ticking.
The frame 23 of the back section l2, is provided with two faces, and one face, i. e., the rear face when the back section is in an upright position, is provided with a mattress section 3l, which is also preferably of the'inner spring construction. The normal front face of the frame 23 carries an upholstered davenport cushion 32 and this cushion terminates short of the normal lower edge of the back section, as can be best seen in Figure l, of the drawings.
The back section adjacent to its normal lower end is pivotally connected to the side boards 23 of the end arm frames i and i 6, adjacent to the rear ends of these arm frames. As illustrated, the side boards or rails 26 have rigidly secured thereto pivot brackets or fixtures 33 and the frame 26 of the back section I2, has rigidly secured tol its front face, pivot brackets 34 and pivot pins 35 connect the brackets 33 and 34 together. Consequently, the back section I2, can be pulled forwardly and swung down into the frame I I when the front land intermediate sections are swung forwardly and out of the frame, When the back section is swung down into the frame, themattress 3I is uppermost and means is provided for holding this frame in a substantially horizontal position. This means can consist of pivoted legs 36 carried by the sides of the frame 2B of the section I2. As illustrated, the legs 36 are pivoted as at 37 tor brackets 38 which are rigidly fastened to the sides of the frame. Stops 39 are carried by the brackets which limit the forward swinging movement of the legs. When the legs are swung at right angles Yto the frame of the back section, said legs will engage and rest Von the angle bars 2i, and consequently, the section I2 will be firmly held in its horizontal position.
When the back section is swung baci: to its normal davenport sitting position,'the samefis held in its upright position byV inwardly extending stop pins 43 carried by the arm frames I5 and I6 and these stop pins are arranged in the path of the rearward swinging movement of the back rest and the brackets 38 engage said pins and eifectively hold the back rest in its upright inclined position.
The front and intermediate sections are connected tothe main frame ii in a novel manner and hinges 4i connect the frame of the intermediate section to the inner face of the front rail 23 of the frame H, adjacent to its upperv edge and hence this intermediate section can be swung on its hinges Yup and then forwardly out of the frame II with the bottom thereof resting upon the upper edge of the front rail 23, as is clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The frames Ward push will be exerted on the upper ends of.k
26 of the front section I3 and the intermediate section I4 are pivotally connected together by knuckle hinges 42 and it is to be noted by referring to Figure 3, that when Athe sections are in their open forward bed position that the sections 43 and 44 of the hinges abut, so that these sections will be maintained in a horizontal position.
By referring to Figure l, it can be seen that when the davenport bed is in itsset up position for sitting, that the intermediate section i4 is swung downinto the frame I I and that the mattress portion thereof is lowermost. Various means can be provided for holding this section in the frame II and off of the floor. As illustrated, the hinge leaves 44 of the hinges 42 have secured thereto legs 45 and these legs are adapted to rest on the angle bars 2| when this section is in its folded position. This is also clearly shown in Figure 1. The front section I3 lies over the intermediate section and the front edge of this section rests upon the upper edge of the front rail 23. ,n
The davenport bed is so constructed, as heretofore brought out, that persons do not sit upon the mattress parts of the sections and by utilizing this novel construction the sections I3 and I4 nt low within the frame and upholstered cushions 43 can be placed upon the upper face of the section I3. Obviously, these seat cushions are removed when the davenport is to be used asa bed. To give a desired'finishing effect, the frame 28 0f the section I3 can have rigidly secured thereto an ornamental upstanding upholstered board 4T, which gives a rolled edge `appearance to .the davenport and this part 4l' also acts as a stop for the seat cushions 43.
When the davenport is opened into a bed, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, the sections I3 and I 4 are supported at their front by legs 48. rThese legs are pivotally connected adjacent to their upper ends to the frame 26 of the section I3 by pivot pins 49 and these pivot pins are carried by brackets 5E, which are rigidly secured to the frame of the front section. kThe legs extend above the frame of the front section and have pivotally connected thereto as at 5i operating links 52. The inner ends of these links Vare in turn, pivotally connected as at 53, to the hinge leaves 43 of the hinges 42. As the section I3 is pulled forwardly and the section I 4 swings into a room, the connecting links 52 will be pulled rearwardly so as to swing the legs 43 to their vertical positions. In the reverse action, when the section I 3 is swung up and rearwardly, a' forthe legs and the lower ends of the legs will be swung inwardly. This position is best shown in Figure 1.
In use of the davenpcrt bed, to open the same, it is merely necessary to first remove the seat cushions 46 and to then grasp the nishing board 4l, or other convenient part of the front section, and pull up and forwardly on the same, so as to swing the'intermediate section I4 on its hinges 4I. The front section I3 and the intermediate section I4 will now automatically swing to a horizontal position and the legs 48 will .swing to their vertical position.` The sections I3 and I4 will then be rmly supported in the manner heretofore described. The back section I2 is now grasped ad.- jacent to the upper end thereof and for swinging downwardly land forwardly into the frame in rear of the intermediate section I4, and afs-this isdone the legs 36 are swung on their pivots until the In closing the davenport so thatthe same can be used for sitting and reclining, the back section I2 can be grasped adjacent to its front or upper end and this back section is swung bodily upwardly and vrearwardly on the hinge pins 35 until the brackets 38 abut the ystop pins 40. The front or seat section I3 is now grasped and the sections I3 and I4 are swung on the hinges 4I and when a desired height is reached, the section I3 is moved down slightly so as. to break the hinges 42, after which the section I4 will continue its swinging movement into the frame and the section I3 will follow and rest on top thereof. The seat cushions 46 can now be replaced and the desired good appearing davenport will be had.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that I have provided a bed davenport which can be easily and quickly operated by a housewife, and one in which when open, the same will form a complete bed with flat mattress sections having their facing ends in close relationl and one in which the davenport upholstery is not utilized i for sleeping purposes.
`connecting the extreme edge of the intermediate section to the front rail adjacent to the upper portion thereof, whereby the seat and intermediate sections can be swung into the frame, said frame being provided with horizontally disposed angle bar rests, means hingedly connecting the back section to the frame adjacent to its lower end for swinging movementto and from an upright position into the frame, and legs on the Y back section for engaging said angle bar rests when the back section is swung into the frame.
2. A combination davenport and bed comprising a main frame including side rails and connecting front and rear rails, a back section, a seat section and an intermediate section associated with the frame, means hingedly connecting the adjacent ends of the seat and intermediate sections together for swinging movement in one position one upon the top of the other, hinges.
connecting the extreme edge of the intermediate section to the front rail adjacent to the upper portion thereof, whereby the seat and intermediate sections can be swung into the frame, said frame being provided with horizontally disposed angle bar rests, means hingedly connecting the baci; section to the frame adjacent to its lower end for swinging movementto and from an upright position into the frame, legs on the back section for engaging said angle bar rests when the back section is swung into the frame, Aand said front section having legs adapted to engage said angle lbar rests when the back section is swung to an upright position and when said seat and intermediate sections and swung into the frame.
