This invention relates to a hair curling device and it is a particular object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which will enable a person to curl her own hair speedily and effectively.

Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind with means whereby the user may determine by finger touch the proper position of the device when in use.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hair curling device whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a hair curling device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a view in front end elevation of the device as illustrated in Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line d4 of Figure 2;

Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the fingers slightly separated; and

Figure 6 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-45 of Figure 4.

As illustrated in the accompanying drawings the device comprises two members A and B of suitable material but preferably of plastic. The member A includes a forward portion 1 relatively broad and having an inner fiat face 2 coplanar with an inner flat face 3 of a forwardly directed curling finger t. This finger 4 is downwardly tapered from its inner end to its outer end and said finger 4 is also substantially semi-circular in cross section at all points therealong. The outer curved surface of the finger 4 is preferably roughened or knurled, as at 5 and said finger 4 at substantially the transverse center of the inner or fiat face 6 thereof is provided therealon'g with a kerf i open at the outer end of the finger 4.

The inner flat face 2 of the forward portion 1 of the member A normally has close contact with the inner fiat face 8 of the forward portion 9 of the member B and the inner fiat face 3 of the finger 4 is normally in close contact with the inner face II! of the finger l l extending outwardly from the forward end of the portion 9 of the member.

The finger H is co-extensive inlength with the finger 4 and taperedfromitsinnernend toxits outer end. The finger l l is also substantially semi-circular.in cross section from end *to end and is provided throughout its length .withakerf -12 whichsregisters with the kerf l of the'finger. 4.

The rear'or inner. end :portionsgof themembers A and B have their opposed inner fiat faces 2 and It provided thereacross with the registering channels I5 and I6 respectively. The ends of the channel It are closed by the end walls I! having the outstanding semi-circular ears l8 which are received in the adjacent end portions of the channel l5 of the member A. Each of these channels I5 and i6 is also semi-circular in cross section from end to end and of a radius substantially the same as the radius of the ears.

The extremities of the channel I5 slightly inwardly of its ends are closed by the walls l9 having the outstanding ears 20 semi-circular in form and which extend within the channel l5 and in close contact with the inner faces of the end walls H. The ears [8 of the end walls I! are in close contact with the outer faces of the ears 23. (Figure 4.)

Disposed through the end walls I! and I9 and the ears [8 and 20 is a headed pintle 2| whereby the members A and B are secured for relatively swinging movement. The free extremity of the pintle 2| after being applied has pressed or otherwise secured thereto a holding cap 22 which coacts from without with one of the end walls I! and associated ear I8.

With the registering channels l5 and I6 is a coil spring 23 of requisite tension and encircling the pintle 2 I. One extremity of the spring 23 is engaged, as at 24, to the member A while the opposite extremity of the spring is engaged, as at 25, to the member B. This spring 23 maintains normally the opposed fiat faces 2 and 8 of the members A and B respectively in close contact.

The member A has extending rearwardly therefrom a handle member 25 while the member B has extending rearwardly therefrom a handle member 2? herein disclosed as constituting a comb. The handle members, when the members A and B are in their normal or closed positions, are so spaced apart that by suitable pressure thereon 3 by the hand of the operator grasping said handle members 26 and 21, the fingers 4 and H may be separated as desired.

The outer faces of the forward extremities of the members A and B immediately adjacent to the fingers 4 and l I are provided with the raised portions 28 to enable the operater to locate by sense of finger touch the location of the kerfs I and H! of the fingers 4 and H during a working operation which is particularly desirable when it is desired to insert or apply hair pins, clips or the like to fasten the curl of hair. It is believed obvious that in forming the curl, the ends of the hair look will be clamped between the opposed faces of the fingers 4 and H after which the device will be rotated to wind the lock of hair around said fingers.

It is to be noted that the fingers 4 and H act as clamping jaws for the hair.

After the curl has been formed the fingers 4 and l I will be separated sufficiently to release the lock whereupon the fingers will be withdrawn from within the curl.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a hair curling device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and used.

I claim:

In a hair curling device, a pair of elongated members formed to provide substantially spaced apart rear end portions, constituting handles, intermediate thickened portions having flat opposing surfaces and forwardly tapering front end portions of semi-cylindrical cross-section, the rear end portions of the thickened portions being inwardly recessed in the longitudinal direction, the side walls of the recess in one of the thickened portions being disposed in overlapping relation with respect to the side walls of the recess in the other thickened portion, a pivot pin passing through the said overlapping recess walls, and a coil spring associated with the pivot pin to hold the members normally parallel, the outer surfaces of the front end portions being knurled and these portions longitudinally halved by kerfs which extend forwardly from points slightly inward of the forward ends of the thickened portions.
