'reality `l/l-fyr invention relates'generally to combs and morev particularly to 'a` combination implementdesigz'iedA forthe use of hairdressers in produc-l ing per-marient Waves andwhieh implement includes 'a comb, a flexible rod-like member forl spreading, stretching, and folding in the loose endsofmthe h air as the same isapplied to the conventional rods used in permanent waving machines and to a key utilized for locking the rods after the hair has been properly curled thereon.
The principal ob-ject of my invention is, to provide a unitary structure wherein a comb and a plate that is designed to be gripped between the thumb and index nger of the operators hand are formed from a single piece of material and mounted on a rod, preferably formed of resilient metal, so that the greater portion of said rod may be utilized in the spreading, flattening and stretching of the hair while the device is in use, and the opposite end of said rod being extended a short distance from the back of the comb to function as a key that may be conveniently employed in tightening and releasing the ratchet associated with the conventional curler rod.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a device of the character referred to wherein a tube, preferably of` metal, is embedded in the back of the comb and the plate that is gripped between the thumb and finger, which tube provides a reinforcement for said comb and also provides a bearing for that portion of the rod that extends through the back of the comb and said plate.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive combination tool that may be conveniently used by hairdressers engaged in preparing the hair that is to be permanently waved.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a combination halrdressing implement constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing which illustrate a preferred embodiment thaY milled or provided with' smalloriugations; v
Formed integral with one end of the body or back of the comb is a plate I3, the side faces I4 of which are concave longitudinally in order that said plate may be conveniently grasped between the thumb and index finger while the implement is being used as a hair spreader, and these concave side faces maybe milled or provided With small corrugations.
Extending longitudinally through the back or body I and likewise through the center of the plate I3 is a tube I5, preferably of metal, the ends of which extend slightly beyond the outer end of the comb back I0 and the outer endof plate I3. The comb body, its teeth II, and the plate I3 may be formed from any suitable material, for instance; light weight metal, or any of the plastics nowV on the market, and in order to firmly anchor the tube in the comb body and plate, said tube is positioned in the mold in which the comb and plate are cast.
Extending through tube I5 and suitably anchored therein is a rod II of resilient metal, for instance, stainless steel, and that portion I'I of the rod that projects beyond the plate I3 functions as a resilient nger for the spreading, flattening, and stretching the strand of hair as it is applied to the curler rod of the permanent wave machine and also for folding in the loose ends of the hair before the ratchet of the rod is manip.- ulated to secure the hair thereon.
While the resilient 1in-ger I1 is being used for manipulating the hair, the comb forms a handle that is grasped in the hand of the user with the thumb and index finger engaging the concave side faces I4 of plate I3.
When the' comb is used for combing out the strand of hair that is to be worked into a curl, the resilient finger I'I passes across the palm of the operators hand and the plate I3 is gripped between the thumb and index finger.
Ihus the implement can be very conveniently handled while being used as a comb or for spreading and stretching the hair while being applied to the curler rod. After the hair has been properly curled about the curler rod, the short end I8 of the rod that projects beyond the outer end of the comb handle Ii) is utilized as a key for IT' tre-ie s [ji oI-nb, the 'samer havingv l formed integral f slightlyconca-ve'.andin order to increasev the 'rippingfefi'ec'tfofl the thumb and fingers'- with the comb, the concave sideY faces I 2` may 'bev tightening the ratchet of the curler rod to secure the curled hair thereon.
It will be noted that short portions of the tube I5 project beyond the ends of the back or body `of the comb I0 and the plate or extension I3 that is to be permanently waved and which implement is simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved permanent wave comb and spreader, may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope ofv which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A permanent wave comb and spreader ccmprising a comb including a back and comb teeth, a plate projecting from one end of the comb back, a rod of resilient material extending through the back of the comb and through said plate, a substantial portion of which rod projects from said plate and a short portion of said rod projecting from the end of the comb back and a reinforcing tube secured to said rod and extending through said comb back and said plate and the end portions of which tube extend short distances beyond the ends of said comb back and plate.
2. A permanent wave comb and spreader as set forth in claim 1 and the sides of said comb back and plate being provided with concave surfaces.
3. In a permanent wave comb and spreader, a comb comprising a back and teeth, a plate formed integral with one endof the comb back, a separately formed tubular reinforcing member embedded in and extending lengthwise through said comb back and plate and a rod of resilient metal sealed in and extending through said reinforcing member, with a substantial portion of said rod projecting beyond the end of said plate and a short portion of said rod projecting from the end of the handle.
