July 7, 1959 United States Patent O BROOM CONSTRUCTION John C. Jones, Waco, Tex.
Application December 20, 1957, Serial No. 704,045
1 Claim. (Cl. 15-146) This invention relates to a broom, and aims to provide a broom having a removable handle, so constructed that when the broom straw or head of the broom becomes worn beyond use, the broom straw or brush portion of the broom may be removed and a new Ibrush section permanently secured on the broom handle removably securing the broom handle and new brush section together.
Another object of the invention is to provide a broom including a handle and a brush section secured together by means of a clamp embodying a pair of cooperating separable clamp sections adapted to grip the sides of said broom head and handle, the clamp section having inclined outer surfaces and a slip ring slidable over said inclined surfaces moving said clamp sections into gripping relation with said handle and brush section.
A further object of the invention is to provide a broom including a plastic culi? normally oval in shape, the cuff being placed under pressure temporarily deforming the cuif to a shape round in cross section to receive an end of a bundle of brush or broom straws which have been dipped in adhesive material, whereupon the cuff is returned to its original or oval shape and the adhesive material allowed to dry under clamp pressure, maintaining the brush section in its desired shape.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a broom constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view of the broom.
Fig. 3 is an edge elevational view through the broom head and clamp of the broom, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, the handle of the broom being shown in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the broom comprises a brush or head section indicated generally by the reference character 5 and comprises a bundle of broom straws 6 which are positioned within a plastic cuif 7, which cuff is normally oval in cross section.
2,893,034 Patented July 7, 1959 ICC One end of the broom straws 6 or head is dipped in adhesive material and the cui section 7 is placed under the pressure of a clamp to cause the same to take a deformed shape circular in cross section to receive one end of the bundle of broom straws. The cuff, together with the broom straws is now placed under pressure to return the cui to its normal oval shape and the adhesive material is allowed to dry holding the bundle of broom straws in proper shape providing a broom head.
The head so formed is united with a broom handle, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character 8, by means of a clamp which includes a pair of separable jaws 9, which jaws are formed with inwardly extended offset portions 10 which are fitted Within recesses 14 formed in the outer surfaces of the cuff 7, the side edges of the jaws 9 engaging the walls of said recesses 14 holding said jaws against twisting with respect to said cuff 7. As shown, the clamp also includes arms 11 which have their outer surfaces inclined and curved longitudinally to t over the broom handle 8 to grip the broom handle.
Positioned on the arms 11 for sliding movement thereover, is a slip ring 12 which when moved from the position as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing, to the limit of its movement towards the jaws, will Iassume the position as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing, securely holding the handle and brush or head section together.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, the brush or head Section may be removed `and replaced within the clamp securely holding the broom handle and brush or head section together, providing a new brush or broom and eliminating the necessity of replacing the broom in its entirety.
Having Ithus described the invention, what is claimed 1s:
In a broom, a broom head comprising broom straws secured together by adhesive material, a cuff encasing an end portion of said broom head further securing the broom straws together, said cuif having recesses formed in the outer side surfaces thereof, ia removable handle, a clamp comprising jaws tted in said recesses, in contact with the walls thereof, said jaws embodying con- Iverging arms formed integral therewith, adapted `to removably grip the handle positioned between said jaws, said handle being held between said jaws resting on said cuff, and a lslip ring movable over said arms adapted to move the jaws and arms into contact with the cuff and handle respectively.
