St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Missouri AppIication August 8, 1947, Serial No. 767,566 7 This invention relates to clips designed for use in connection with pens, pencils, or other like writing devices, which are employed to hold the device in position in a pocket or at other places on the clothing of a wearer.

It is a general object of the invention to provide a clip of the type described whose component parts are easily and quickly assembled, one which is economical to produce, one which will provide a more positive attachment to the fabric it engages, one which is neat in appearance and which will not become distorted, bent or inoperative with long use.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent as the specification proceeds, and a more comprehensive understanding of the invention will be afforded from the following detailed description when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which-- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a clip embodying the instant invention, showing the 2 Claims. Briefly stated, an embodiment of the invention includes a spring-pressed clip comprising an elongated clip body having a portion thereof urged against a portion of the device to which it is attached to engage a fabric therebetween, which body is held in position by an elongated spring extending substantially the length of the clip body and having one end thereof extending into a shell or tubular portion of the device to which it is attached, the same being anchored therein by a grooved bushing. The spring is arranged to rest on a lug comprising a raised portion of a pencil cap, which portion is struck outwardly therefrom and is so dimensioned as to fit tightly into and between two walls or ears of the clip body. The latter arrangement of the parts provides means for preventing the clip from moving laterally with respect to the cap to which it is attached.

More specifically and as illustrated in the various views, the clip comprises an elongated clip body II which has a clamping tip portion I2 thereof bent and turned under to engage a support such as a pocket wall (not shown) between the portion I2of the clip body and the device to which the clip is attached, in the illustrated example the same being a pencil cap I3. The clip body II extends into two side walls I4 and I5, which encompass a lug H3 formed as a raised portion of the wall of the pencil cap I3. A clip spring IT is soldered onto the clip body II at several points of contact therewith, or otherwise suitably held therein, and extends substantially throughout its length, the same terminating in a bent section I8 at one end thereof which rides against the section i2 of the body. At its other end, the spring is formed with a bent section I9 which passes through an aperture 2| in the cap I3 and extends into a groove 22 of a retainer bushing 23.

As previously stated, the clip just described is shown by way of illustrative example as being mounted on a pencil 24 which is provided with the cap I3. It is to be understood, however, that the clip is equally adaptable to other devices which may or may not have a removable cap. All that is required is that the barrel of the device to which it is attached be apertured and hollowed at the place where the clip is to be attached, in order to provide for the insertion of the clip spring I! and for the retainer bushing 23. It is to be noted further that the clip may be attached to pens or other like devices either with or without caps, and accordingly no limitation is to be inferred from the illustrative teaching.

As will be apparent from Fig. 2, the walls i l and I5 of the clip body are dimensioned to encompass and fit tightly against the lug it of the cap I3. Moreover, the groove 22 of the retainer bushing 23 is so dimensioned as to closely andtightly retain the bent section I9 of the clip spring I1 therein. With this arrangement of the parts the clip is held against lateral movement by engagement with two fixed stops, spaced longitudinally of the cap, thereby retaining the section I2 on the clip body in a fixed position at all times against the pencil cap I3.

Various changes may be made in the details of construction, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention, and parts of the invention may be used without the whole and improvements may be added while retaining some or all of the advantages of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. In combination with a pencil cap -or the like, a retaining clip comprising, an elongated body formed with a clamping tip at one end thereof and with a pair of spaced side walls adjacent the other end thereof, said cap having a hollow portion and a lug projecting outward from its outer surface between said side Walls of said cap, an elongated clamping spring extending along said clip body and attached thereto, said spring having a bent end portion extending through the wall of said cap into said hollow portion, and a retainer in said hollow portion having a recess in which said end portion of said spring is anchored at a point spaced longitudinally of said cap from said lug.

2. In combination with a pencil cap or the like, a retaining clip comprising, an elongated body formed with a hollow clamping tip at one end 7 tip, said spring having a bent end portion extending through the wall of said cap into said hollow portion, and a retainer in said hollow portion having a recess in which said end portion of said spring is anchored at a point spaced longitudinally of said cap from said lug.
