COMBINED POCKET-CLIP AND ERASER-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL GORSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pocket-Clips and Eraser-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v

The invention relates to a pocket clip for fountain pens, pencils or the like and more particularly to the class of combined pocket clips and eraser attachments for writing instruments.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a clip of this character in which a fountain pen, pencil or other writing instrument may be securely fastened within the pocket of the vest or other article of wearing apparel without the possibility of accidental detachment therefrom which would necessarily result in the loss of the instrument.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a clip of this character in which an eraser is held so that the'same may be readily and conveniently used when desired and also that will retain a pencil, fountain pen or other writing instrument within the vest pocket or other article of wearing apparel to prevent the loss of the said instrument.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be conveniently andquickly applied to varying styles of fountain pens, pencils orother writing instruments andthat is sim ple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its function and inexpensive-in manufacture.

With these andothe-r objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, disclosing the preferred form of embodiment" of the invention and pointed. out in the claim hereunto appended. I

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the body of the fountain pen of the ordinary well-known construction, to which is attached a cap 6 which forms a separable part of the pen and upon this cap is attached the pocket clip as will be hereinafter more fully described.

The clip comprises a cylindrical sleeve 7 formed from a single piece of metal one end of which is provided with a slot Sextending for a portion of the longitudinal length of the sleeve 7 i and open through one end thereof thus enabling this end of the sleeve to v be readily inserted upon the cap 6 of the fountain pen 5 or upon another Writing implement when desired. The sleeve is pro-- vided with a series of independent spiral grooves 9 struck or rolled from the body of the sleeve7 so as to materially strengthen the said sleeve and also to provide a grip ping surface for a rubber eraser 10 inserted in the end of the sleeve 7 opposite its slotted end.- This rubber eraser 10 is snugly fitted or screwed down'into the sleeves 7 and by the formation of the grooves 9 it will be firmly held in place and prevented while in use from being pushed too far within the sleeve and at the same time enabling it to be screwed up out of the tube as it becomes worn away.

' At a pointdiametrically opposite the slot 8 and integral with the inner end of the sleeve 7 is a resilient tongue or spring finger 11 the same being tapered toward its free end and bent inwardly for grasping or exerting a pressure upon that part of a pocket or clothing which is inserted between said finger 11 and the-outer surface of the cap 6. The outer free end of the finger is provided with a ball terminal 12 which enables the said finger to slide freely over the cloth or pocket when inserting the pen or due to the fact that the garment is engaged between the finger 11' and the ring element 13 producing increased gripping pressure as well as preventing displacement of the clip and. serving to hold the instrumentmore firmly in position.
