To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that ll, GEORGE W. HEATH, a citizen of the United States residing in the city of Newark, county of ssex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Demountable lBen-Clips, of which the following is a specitication.
The portions of these clips which are visible are frequently made ot gold or other precious metal and for economical reasons it is desirable in replacing the worn spring member to discard as little of the device as possible. `accordingly it is among the ob jects of the invention to provide a spring member oi" the least possible amount oit ma` terial and to provide a simple means ifor securely and quickly attaching this spring member to the pen.
l attain this feature ot my invention by iinedly attaching a channel member to the pen which member may be ot some suitable strong metal and providing the more expensive spring member with a spring looking engagement with the channel member.
Various other objects and advantages et the invention will be in part-obvious iirom an inspection oi the accompanying drawings and in part will be more fully set 'forth in the following particular description ot one form ot mechanism embodying theinvendii tion, and the invention further consists in certain new and novel features ci construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed'.

This plate has its opposite longitudinal edges inturned to form'the Iinwardly facing channel members 5 and 6. As this plate is concealed by the'spring member hereinafter described it may be made of some inexpensive metal and preferably is made ot thin gage material so as to take up the least possible amount ot space. This base is reduced in width to form edge shoulders l0 and il, which engage the end ol the plate adjacent the bend 8. rlhe base is preferably of less thickness of material than the other' portion oi: this member 'for the portion of the plate forming the channels will compensate for any weakness resulting :trom thin-a ning out this base portion and atthe same time result in economy in metal used to term this spring member and reduces the thickness or the attachment.
The end of the base opposite thebend is split to iformV outside spring iingers l2 and i3 which have a 'tendency to spring'outward into locking engagement with the channel members 5 and 6, leaving a middle portion therebetween to bear on the pen barrel. Prefer-ably the ends of these lingers are outturned as shown in Figs. 4land 5 and odset toward or into engagement with the barrel and to engage the adjacent end of the chanu nel members and thus lock the' member 7 'to the plate 2. A spherical baille is loosely mounted in 'the pocket engaginglportion l5 ot the member 7 adjacent its free endand has its upper and under sides free for rolling engagement in any direction.
rlhe plate 2 is suitably alizined to the pen barrel with the channeled side lacing outward and the base ont the spring portion is inserted on the plate in position to have a spring tight t between the grooves.- Should. it be desired to demount the spring member the fingers 12 and i3 are pressed toward each other by means of a pair of pincers or other suitable tool and the spring member withdrawn to permit the insertion of a new member or to permit the insertion of a member of diderent Character or metal.

j By'means of a device of this character it is pcssible to make the spring member of a minimum amount of precious metal and to' replace the member when it becomes worn or damaged.A The base portion may be thinned out, if desired, thus economizng in the' use of the metal, while maintaining the necessary rigidity to the spring and at the same time the channel portion of the plate 1 provides a reinforcement to compensate for any weakening due to the thinned By means of a device of this character it is possible to form the spring member of metal rolled to gage and stamped to shape and which maybe readily bent to provide a two point contact, one of which contacts may provide a rolling engagement with the support as shown and the other of which may provide a pinching engagement with the edge of the support.
The rolling contact provided by the ball reduces the scratching of the barrel when the clip is slid into the grooved channels. i
While I havelshown and described, and have pointed out in the annexed claims, certain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and .in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a pen barrel, a plate tting the outside of the barrel and ixedly attached thereto, said plate having its opposite edges inturned to form oppositely disposed channels, a demountable clip having a base portion adapted to be slidably inserted between said channels to face said plate, said portion having an outturned resilient end constituting a locking means for holding said member to the plate.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a pen barrel 'having a plate aiixed thereto, said plate having its opposite longitudinal edges inturned to form oppositely disposed grooves, of a cli having .a portion insertible -between sai grooves-and means carried by said portion and movable relative thereto for springing the same into frictional engagement with the inturned edges of the plate, thus locking the clip from movement longitudinally of the grooves, said means adapted to be moved into unlocking position thereby permitting the dismounting ofthe clip.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a plate'having opposite 'edges turned in to form oppositely disposed channels adapted to be attached to 'a pen barrel, of a one-piece relatively light clip v demountably attached to the plate and comprising a-spring member and a base, said base bein of a thickness less than the thickness of t e spring'member and insertible between said grooves, said grooves lapping the base and tendin tov compensate for the Aweakening of the cip due to the thinned spaced from the bend, one of said contacts being adjacent the fastenin device and the other being adjacent the ee end of the spring member.
5. The combination with a pen barrel, of
a fastening device fixed to the outside thereof, of a clip havin a base portion fastened to said device and having a spring member bent back upon the base, said spring member providing a two point contact spaced from the bend, one of said contacts being adjacent the fastening device and the other being adjacent the free end of the member, said other contact being a rolling contact.
6. As an article of manufacture, a clip construction comprising a plate having oppositely disposed channels, of a spring clip having a base portion insertible between said channels and having a resilient extension projecting beyond an edge of said plate, the projecting portion being bent from the general plane of the base portion about the end 'of the plate thereby to retain the clip in position on the plate.
7. As an article of manufacture, a pen clip comprising a plate having fastening prongs integral therewith and adapted to be upset in apertures in a fountain pen barrel, a spring member engaged frictionally by said plate to hold the same in place, said member having a plurality of spaced apart resilient pocket engaging portions and meansfor demountably fastening the member to the plate` in positively xed position relative thereto.
