ATTORNEY 1 Patented Nov. 27, 1951 PEDESTAL TABLE WITH PIVOTED DROP LEAF AND FOLDING BASE.
Henry E. English, Tampa, Fla. Application May 28, 1946, Serial No. 672,798
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to furniture, and more particularly to tables, susceptible of numerous and varied uses, where it is desirable to change the size to meet the desired conditions, or in other words, tables susceptible of wide use including. for example, in limited living quarters where space is at a premium, aswell as a tablewhich may be easily transported.
Heretofore when it was desirable to have the benefit of several types of tables in the home, such as a dining table, a card table, an ironing board, or the like, it was necessary to have one of each, resulting in a relatively large amount of space being occupied by tables either in use or not, with an outlay proportionate to the number required. Furthermore, many folding tables which have been available are of poor unsubstantial design, having too limited a use, are difiicult to manipulate and even when folded have protruding members which provide undesired obstacles.
It is an object of this invention to provide a folding table having a drop leaf table top pivotally supported by a single pedestal with a folding base, in order that the entire structure may be folded into substantially one plane.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the table as it appears when set up for use;
Fig. 2, a perspective view of the table as it appears when partially folded;
Fig. 3, an elevation of the table, when folded, viewed along the plane of the table top; and,
Fig. 4, a modified construction illustrating an alternate means of affording support for the drop leaves.
With continued reference to the drawings, a table top is provided with drop leaves or additional surface members I l pivotally attached to the table top H] by hinges l2 and adapted to be supported in the same plane as the table top ID by pivoted members l3 attached to said table top. A supporting member or pedestal I4 is pivotally attached to the table top by hinge l5.
Rigidly attached to the pedestal l4 and resting in a notch [4' in the pedestal is a supporting rod [6 adapted to rest against the under side of the table top when the table is in the position to be used, to provide additional support.
A transverse member forming two outriggers or feet I! is rigidly attached to the lower extremity of the pedestal M, and a pair of additional outriggers [8 are pivotally attached by hinges l9 to the intermediate portion of the members forming feet [1. Spring latches attached to each of the outriggers I! are adapted to cooperate with catches 2| attached to each of the outriggers [8 to hold outriggers l8 perpen-i dicular or crosswise of outriggers H. A spring latch 22 attached to the under side of the table top I0 is adapted to cooperate with the catch 23 attached to the pedestal l4 when the plane of the table top It] is perpendicular to the pedestal II, to prevent the table top I!) from pivoting about the hinge [5.
In order to secure the table top in a plane substantially parallel with that of the pedestal, a projection 24 attached to the undersideof the table top I0 is adapted to engage a clip 25 attached to the pedestal M.
For the purpose of holding the drop leaves ll 20 back against the table top H), as shown in Fig.
3, members 26, having declivities 28, adapted to rotate about pins 21, aflixed to table top Ill, are provided to engage hooks 29 attached to the underside of drop leaves I l.
Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 4, sliding bolts 30 are adapted to be positioned and supported by channel members 3| and 32 which are affixed to the underside of the table top l0 and drop leaves II. The sliding bolts 30 are adapted to support the drop leaves II when it is desired to use said drop leaves to provide additional table surface. Projections 33 are affixed to the underside of table top ID to limit the retraction of sliding bolts 30 by acting as stops thereto.
Thus the invention discloses a table of general utility designed to be used satisfactorily as a utility table for dining, card-playing, ironing, writing, and the like, which may be economically made and which may be folded to occupy a very small space. While we have illustrated one particular form of the invention it is obvious that changes and adaptations may be made thereto within the scope of the following claim without departing from the spirit, purpose, and intent of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A folding table comprising an elongated upright pedestal, a table top having an elongated intermediate section centrally pivoted to the top of said pedestal adjacent one edge thereof, a pair of elongated leaves hingedly connected to the longitudinal edges of said intermediate section, a rod rigidly secured in a recess formed in the top of said pedestal and extending transversely of said intermediate section to provide additional support therefor, a plurality of elongated members centrally pivoted on the underside of said table top adjacent the longitudinal edges thereof, said members being movable to a position supporting said leaves in extended position, a hook member on the underside of each of said leaves and cooperating members pivotally mounted on the underside of said intermediate section engageable with saidhook members for retaining said leaves in folded position, a catch mounted on the upper portion of said pedestal opposite said pivotal connection and a spring latch mounted'on the underside of said intermediate section for engagement with said catch to retain said intermediate, section in opened position, a projection attache'd'to the underside of said intermediate section adja-- cent one end thereof and a clip attachedto an intermediate portion of said pedestal for en'' gagementwith said projection to retain said intermediatesection in folded position-against said pedestal, a pair of feet extending-in opposite directions from'the' bottom of said pedestal, an outrigger pivoted'toea'ch ofsaid feet adjacent s'aidfpe'destal and movablefrom' a position be-'- sidef'said feetto a position perpendicularto said f'etgand fastening means on said feetand said 4 Outriggers for retaining them in perpendicular position.
